OK, no idea what this is. Won't analyze or optimize but there it is. I do have VMWare Player installed, is that what it is?

Hi popeye,

Any chance that is the actual recovery partition? The reason I suspect that is because my true recovery partition will not optimize either. Also, this unusual naming convention has come up before and the solution was just to rename it.

A disk management view might help to make a better determination because some installs have multiple recovery partitions.

You might try putting the Volume ID (designation) in a Run command to see if it opens any folders or partitions.

If you run a MountVol command in an Admin command prompt, it will usually have a couple of mount points with volume IDs and no drive letters.

Thanks for the replies. I don't think it has anything to do with recovery as I have that showing also. I'll try your suggestions Saltgrass. Making me a bit loony trying to figure out what it is.

It also depends on your installation. As stated before, many installations have multiple recovery partitions:

Good luck with your issue.

I have the same on my Win 8.1 Pro system.

I use a 250GB Samsung SSD and it shows the same type of "drive" as you show. Different numbers but basically the same. No idea what it is though.

Popeye should consider providing a view of disk management (as requested). Once done, that partition will be easily identified. Not sure why he hasn't done that yet. My guess is that he has already figured it out based on the many responses. However, unless he chooses to provide that view, we'll never know for sure.

In my case the drive did not exist in disk management - I could only see it in defrag and the system restore pane.

In addition to my previous post, you could uncheck 'Hide protected System files' in Folder Options then type that path into a 'Run' dialog.

Sorry, was busy and just getting back to this. Here is MountVol and disk management shot. It does appear in mountvol but not in disk management. Guess I'll just assume it is a glitch and leave it be for now. Not up for a reinstall. Thanks again for all the replies and help.

That disk management view speaks "volumes" in itself (no pun intended). Why do I see the same disks listed "twice?" Did you somhow combine two views so perfectly or does it really look like that? If that is a true depiction of your disk management view, I would put "two and two together." Specifically, those two unmountable volumes look like they might belong to those two duplicate entries in disk management. However, if that is, in fact, a perfect paste/combine job of two distinct disk management views, you sure fooled me. However, if not, I see an adamf solution in you near or distant future. Good luck to you.

Dude, I haven't pasted anything. It is just the top and bottom view and I failed to scroll on the bottom view. So sorry but sure didn't need your smart remarks so early this morning. You have a nice day and I hope to never deal with you again here.

They were not intended to be smart remarks at all. They were legitimate questions and concerns. Do you have duplicate entries or not? Personally, I will avoid you as well and I offer you no apology for my response which was intended to be a legitimate concern. Next time, post your issue with all necessary details so individuals don't have to be experts in dentistry to extract all required information. Since you are a gold-pipper, I thought you would at least know how to provide all necessary detail in your first post.

Good day to you and good luck with your issue!

Popeye, you are showing 3 Recovery partitions on Disk Management and 3 no mount points volume IDs. Since the one you are looking for is the second one, I would be willing to bet you are looking at the 350 MB recovery partition.

Copy the volume ID from the MountVol command and paste into a run box. It will probably open that partition in Explorer and you would see a file structure like a Recovery and System Volume Information folders, if you have the Hide Protected System operating files unchecked. If that option is not enabled, it will show as empty.
