Right guys, so i'm using a fairly old P.C. I understand my P.C is not going to be lighting fast, but it should be somewhat usable right?
Incorrect. My specs are:
AMD ATHLONG 64 x2 5000+ 2.60ghz
1gb nvidia 9500gt
2gb ram
some nvidia board, pretty old
not high resolution screen, 1280x1024.
not sure what else i'd have to put on here.

Anyhow, it takes google chrome minutes to open, it takes apps ages to open!
I've not got many apps installed neither.
i do have quite afew videos and pictures on my pc though? i have 100gb free out of 240gb?
I've been on laptops with old intel celerons 2.00ghz and are WAY quicker than my pc.
Just need some advice on what to do to speed it up, i know theres buying new parts but i cant afford anything :(
thankyou all.

This is a fairly decent PC and should be reasonably fast. Look into Resource Monitor > CPU tab what is noodling whilst you are trying to open a program or Chrome.

You mean task manager, right? It's taking ages to open. I notice i get a lot of force closes. Could anything be related?

That's actually a little better than my specs. While changing or refreshing pages in IE, my CPU will shoot up to 40%. Screenshot below with IE open and idle. However I have no problems with slow opening of anything but one or two Store apps.

Did you check in System on memory amount? Reason I ask is that you may have a mem stick that is bad or not seated correctly. You may also want to try a mem test.

Being older hardware I think we need to check that first. Are you running 8 or 8.1?

Please right click on lower hot corner Start flag and push System to see if you indeed have 2GBs of RAM.

8.1 does run maintenance and checking automatically. Not sure about 8. However, you can run these tests just in case something is wrong with maintenance.

Memory check: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Diagnosing-memory-problems-on-your-computer

Run Chkdsk. Windows Key + R > copy/paste or type chkdsk. Make sure"Fix errors" box is checked. You may want to run the extensive test to check all of the disk, however this takes some time. I would advise to since it is older.

BTW, if running 8.1, Windows Key + Q is a great search method for research. Or advanced search here on the forum is great also.

Strike that on the Chkdsk method. I was wrong in Run. File Explorer > Right click drive C: > Choose Properties > Tools tab > Error checking/Check or Lower right hot corner right click Start Flag > Choose Command Prompt (Administrative) > type chkdsk > Enter.

One can also copy/paste by simply right click in Command Prompt box to paste.
