System restore could not start

This is the message I get when I try and open system restore. Can anyone help?

At the same time o0ther serious problems have arisen:

In control panel>programs and features all programs except those named Mi-Mo have disappeared. Some installed since are there, and those in the quick launch menu still work. Most are also missing from the bstart menu.

Al;so on start up I get a small window saying explorer.exe with a yellow exclamation mark and nothing else.

What's happening?

See if you can install MBAM in the admin account and scan from there.

System restore is bad for embedding viruses in the data it saves, so when you restore it releases the virus which really is not great... I run a IT company and whenever we setup business systems we turn of restore... use Acronis ( Best backup software for data protection and disaster recovery instead.. create images and restore in minutes, you can restore over networks and live... restore will cause you grief in the end.. looks like your restore point in your Windows is damaged... back up with live boot, format and reinstall Windows then image and turn of restore point...

Format and reinstall Windows is kind of radiccal before even knowing what the problem is. Reinstall is a fix all that won't disappear. So let's keep it in reserve until some diagnosis is performed. I use backup imaging myself. But if you don't know you are infected the imager will back up infected system files just like the restore point.

Fair call but i dont wait till my complete system is damaged and BIOS/cache is infected.. from experience if a indows tool is affected and anti virus is not access able, so if you want to do system scans try HDD regenerator, disk check and like i said live boot virus check... all these will take longer then creating an iage and reinstall of Windows and set up system right so you have a reduced risk, also imaging with incremental backups will ensure an intrusion can be fixed fast.. If you cant access anti virus, malware bytes and system restore either HDD is damaged with sector errors etc or Windows is corrupt... although format is as you say radical i bet thats the end result... anywho i offer help in peace and hope you sort it out.... id be using Hirens etc to test HDD for sector errors and attempt to create image just in case HDD is on its way out...

It hasn't been determined that av scan cannot be accessed. I'm waiting for response from the OP. For a corporate environment it may be fine to wipe everything at first blush since you have standard setups. Every machine installs from the network image the same. But for the individual user a panic backup and reinstall might not be the best course. Often what was done to customize or get and application to work correctly isn't kept in a log. It's a user not an IT guy.

I agree about having the clean system image handy to restore the system from but do you really believe that we here at this forum aren't already aware of every single thing you are saying here?

Needless to say this system is most likely past the point of no return and it's certainly too late to perform a system image back up. I also highly doubt the harddrive is the problem.

I might think about performing a system file scan or a DISM repair scan but with the A/V's unable to run I'd say this system is already pretty messed up which is typical by the time they get here. ;)

Agreed and i do apologise my friend if i came across different from intended, my brain goes into fix mode and blah... i supported Dentists, lawyers, Foodland and other major businesses where we had backups ready and dint have time to question, replace HDD restore image and test when business is closed.. and yes it does sound like its life is at its end.. :)
