100% disk usage during file transfer

I have searched a lot in a lot of forums regarding this issue. I couldnt find the exact problem Im facing. I found a lot of 100% disk usage problems and their solutions, but none of them could fix mine.

So here is my issue : every time I copy files from one disk to another or even within the same disk among partitions and install a program/game, my computer becomes extremely slow. A single click is responded after 3-4 seconds. When I open control panel, it shows 100% disk usage. As soon as the file transfer gets over, everything becomes normal.

Edit : My problem is not my transfer speed. It is that while a transfer is happening, nothing else works. Even though the transfer rate is 6 -7 mbps

Use a 3rd party file transfer program that lets you throttle the speed.

    Here's one example:

That will always be slow if you think about it for a second. Don't try to make you drive head skip back and forth to different locations. Think - it is a physical piece of metal and you are asking it to move. That takes time.

EDIT: Sorry - I didn't add a solution. The solution is to either add more disk arms (which is not really possible as you have a laptop) or get a SSD. You'll always find 10 x 128GB disk will be faster than 1 TB disk.

I took the OP's problem to be he couldn't do the copies in the background while doing other disk tasks, like installing. That's what throttling is for. Unbridled copy is always going to use 100% of the disk as far as I've ever seen.

Well exactly. If you are copying from once partition to another on the same disk it would be expected.

Is that what you are doing?

The problem is consistent with all forms of file transfer. Whether Im copying from one partition to another, among 2 disks, installing a software from a disk or a virtual disk.

Try the file copy with bandwidth limiter. It gives up time slices so other tasks can use the disks. If you actually try it and there's no difference please post what happens. Trying to do installs while other disk io is going on, well the install is never going to be snappy. It's going to bog.

Maybe turning off auto disk optimization will help.
click the drive -> "manage" will appear in toolbar -> click optimization and turn it off

    do reply
