I have a SeaGate portible drive. (Drive F) I have to save to it because my computer has to go back to the factory. I want to save as much as I can. However... I don't want to copy whatever is wrong with my computer either (in case it is a bad file). It keeps crashing.

So how do I copy the data I need?

Is it possible to save important emails?

My portible drive holds 698 GB.

You can back up documents, music, photos, videos, and desktop with File History. Located in Settings >> Update and Recovery >> File History.

You could also try Macrium Reflect. That's suppose to be good for Windows 8, and it's FREE!

Well, this is going to be quite impossible the way you state it. Nobody knows which files on your system are defunct and do not work.

But if you want to save your user files, mail files and Favorites, that is easy. You can just copy/paste those to your backup drive.

What you can also do is make an image of the whole system with e.g. this imaging program. This image you can always mount later and pick the files you want to save.

Another method is to make an image with the command line. The command is:

WBADMIN START BACKUP -backupTarget:f: -include:c:

This would image your whole C partition to F. This image (the VHD file of it) you can later attach to your new system with Disk Management > Action tab. Then you can pick all the files you want.

Need to take the easiest way. Copy Paste is what I guess I'll do. The other sounds too complicated for me. How do you save emails?

Copy the root Users folder, it should all be there. Depends on your email program how you recover it.

There is also Clonezilla. You can create a USB Pendrive image by downloading Tuxboot at tuxboot.org. Then you can boot up with the Pendrive, make a complete image of the drive, to a network NFS share, or FTP share.

But wouldn't that be a good time to learn things whilst you have the attention of the experts ??

I still think the easiest is using the command I gave you above. Then you cannot lose anything and can still mount this image in 2 years from now. If you forget to copy things now and dismantle your current system, what do you do then.

It should be in C/Users/(the user name you use)

If you use that, you should exclude the Appdata folder. This can be pretty big and is of no real use for the backup.

Not that complicated. Actually Clonezilla is the easiest of all offline backup programs.

Right click on the Desktop and choose Screen Resolution. You can also do that in the Control Panel in Display.

Once the window opens, go to Screen Resolution.

If you have a usb mouse to hook up to the laptop, hold the Ctrl key & roll the mouse wheel to change text size. :)
