Solved The device, \Device\Harddisk0\DR0, has a bad block

Hi, I'm running 8.1 and in the last 2-3 weeks my computer has been constantly experiencing freezes that can last from 5 minutes to over half an hour.

I've check the event viewer and see this item appear regularly: The device, \Device\Harddisk0\DR0, has a bad block.

It's usually accompanied with this message: Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued.

And this pair of items are repeated 6-10 times before a gap.

Then the computer becomes responsive again.

I've run a chkdsk numerous times (using the chkdsk c: /offlinescanandfix command) and various other disk checking tools and they never seem to advise there's a problem. I would have thought that if there was a "bad block" that a chkdsk would find it and exclude it from use to avoid these issues, but no such outcome.

I downloaded Crystal Disk Info and it does show a "caution" status on drive C:. The item highlighted is Current Sector Pending Count. Just wondering what all of this means and how I can resolve this?

Thanks,
Pete

You can't change stuff in SMART but it indicates "weak sectors" which are about to be relocated, Checkdisk can't do nothing about it because they are not flagged as Bad yet. The response you get is pretty generic and if those sectors or blocks can not be read easily, it might be considered as bad. If it's an option, you could back up the drive and "Zero" it but it's pretty drastic measure.
Are you really running a RAID or is it just set in BIOS ?

Thanks Mike. Since posting, I got myself Norton Disk Doctor and performed a surface scan. It detected and isolated the bad sectors and since then, the machine has been running beautifully without even a hint of a problem.

As for RAID, no, not running that setup, so not sure why Windows is doing anything with it...

Check BIOS to see what SATA controller is set to.
Keep an eye on the drive, unless those bad sectors are of software nature ( loose / bad data cables, connections and repeated forced shutdowns can force those) when real bad sectors start appearing, it's backup and replace time soon.
