DPC latency spikes from USBPORT.sys

Hey everyone,

I'm yet another victim of DPC spikes caused by USBPORT.sys. I definitely know there are lots of other threads regarding this problem, but so far none of them have helped.

I tried most of other tweaks suggested, from power management settings, to disabling stuff in the device manager, etc... but nothing so far. I even restored my pc to factory setting yesterday, but still nothing. Tried both on W8 and W8.1. I'm on a laptop by the way.

I would very much appreciate if you could have a look at my .etl file hoping you can see something I don't see from it. I've also added the .txt file since the .etl is quite big.

So how does video and audio work on the machine? Well, without skipping, pops, crackles - good framerate and not choppy?

When I play audio or video it works just fine. The problem arises when I use my Digital Audio Workstation. The cracks/pops are frequent, and often, after 10 minutes or so, it dropouts.

I have a (home) recording studio using Sonar X3 and a Roland Octa-Capture. Are you looking at the DPC Latency Checker? or the Respledence? The DPC Latency Checker is invalid for Windows 8 and will show spikes that are not there.

On my Windows 7 system, I do not have any latency problems (either system or audio) and the DPC Latency Checker (which is valid for Windows 7) shows a very good system, however, the Resplendence program shows many problems, that obviously are either not there or of no consequence.

I used both LatencyMon and xperf which gave me similar results. I tried DPC Latency Checker as well out of curiosity (since they say it doesn't work well on windows 8) and it shows a much worse situation (constant 1ms DPC latency at least, with occasional 5ms spikes).

You don't show any "My System Specs". Some PC spec's would help us to try and help you.

BTW, I have Sonar X3 installed on my Win 8.1 system and the same there, no issues.

If it is firewire-based, you can fix it by using the legacy driver from Windows 7 for IEEE 1394. You have to manually extract it and stuff then import to 8.

I've developed and tested the method many years ago for 7, and 8 still needs it for most pro quality firewire solutions.

MOTU now offers that as their standard advice, based on my findings.

Oops, you're right. Just added them now! Apart from the ones I mentioned in the specs, the laptop also comes with a card reader and bluetooth module. I got my bluetooth module disabled, but I'm not really sure on how to disable the card reader (can't find anything in device manager).

Unfortunately it's not :( . Im using an external USB sounds card, but the high latency also occurs when it is not plugged in.

In addition to the Legacy mode, for many, most audio devices that use Firewire use either the DICE or DICE II Firewire chipset in the device. The DICE/DICE II want to see a T.I. chipset at the PC end for proper operation.

I used to have a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40, Firewire recording interface unit. When I first installed Windows 7 and installed the Saffire Pro 40, I forgot to set the Legacy mode for the Firewire. It worked fine for several months then I started having problems and realized I did not set the port for Legacy. Setting the port to Legacy fixed the problems.

I doubt that the card reader is causing any problems. You could disable it in the Device Manager, though.

Wi-Fi will cause DPC latency and even dropouts in Sonar. Disable the Wi-Fi and see what happens.

Tried already at no avail. Disabled everything in the "Network Adapters" section, just to be sure . I mentioned the card reader because I had read somewhere that in rare cases it could be the culprit.

Ok, I deal with what you're saying all the time on MOTUnation.com for people. (Haven't been there as of late though, for no particular reason. Just slackin' I suppose.)

For USB interfaces, here are the rules:

Update bios to newest.

Update chipset drivers to newest.

Update USB 3.0 driver to newest. (If there is a specific firmware update for 3.0 itself (not bios) - then install too.)

Use a 2.0 port (since your device is likely to be 2.0 anyway) and not 3.0.

If you are using any hub, remove the hub and don't use it.

Update drivers to all other USB devices.

Plug the unit into one that is away from others. For example, if a front port is available and everything else uses rear ports - then use front port.

I would also uninstall any 3rd party antivirus and use Defender instead.

In worst case scenario, I can look over your system:

Yes, this is the touted advice, direct from hardware makers themselves, but I've found it to be of little interest. All sorts of chipsets have worked well and I always advise that too. Seems to be "alright, alright" for all I've helped. But I suppose, if in dire straits, then adhere to it. Good!

Yep. Looked at that and at many other sites. It's like a curse... I had this problem with my previous laptop as well, it turned out to be the ACPI. This time it is the USBPORT.sys I guess, or at least that's what I thought by looking at the .etl file and LatencyMon.

By the way, I've posted the .etl and .txt summary on the first page, just in case.

According to my "samsung update center" every driver is updated. I recovered the laptop to factory settings and installed every driver just the other day (2 or 3 days ago).

So : bios updated, chipset updated, not using hubs, tried disabling everything Universal serial bus controllers in device manager, not using any antivirus. I have even tried tune-up utilities since I was desperate, needless to say it didn't solve much.

The only thing connected right now apart from the power supply is my mouse. Even if I disconnect it the problem still persists, notice this also happens when the audio card is not plugged.

I'm using a Focusrite Saffire 6 USB and FL Studio.
