It seems a pity after all the problems you have had that you are not prepared to try my suggestion to rectify your sfc problem.
Doing as suggested only takes a couple of minutes or so, and will have no effect concerning W8 apart from correcting any faults in your system image which cannot be fixed by doing an sfc /scannow.

Yes it will have an effect. It will lose some of my customization and installed programs. 8.1 has nothing I want. 8. 2 may have, but I'll wait and see. I'm just not ready to upgrade.

I don't use Metro/Modern apps or Desktop at all. I have UAC completely disabled and boot to and run only on the Desktop. All hot corners are also disabled. If 8.2 brings back a real Start menu and the ability to completely turn off the Metro interface I'll upgrade. Otherwise no, unless there are other changes that make it mandatory.

Not having a working SFC/DISM is annoying but not a big deal as I do image backups via Acronis plus copy my important files to a 2nd hard drive and in some cases to another computer.

What I'd like to do is fix the "corrupted" files I listed previously for two reasons. First is so SFC works correctly. 2nd is to learn how to do this.

When the batch file finishes it should look like this:

Dencal, I don't understand what that is supposed to do, can you explain or point me to some information?

This works on a desktop if you have an ISO or dvd......definitely worth a try and you still retain Windows 8.1.
Start laptop then click on "Restart holding down Shift Key".
This will bring up a "Choose An Option Screen"
Click on "Troubleshoot"...then "Advanced Options"....then "System Image Recovery".
This will not affect any thing other than System Image.
    Hope this helps.
David, I have UAC fully disabled so I don't think running from an Elevated Command Prompt with the default directory being C:\Windows\system32 will make any difference. I'll let you know in a little while as I'm running it that way now.

    OK.

By fully disabled do you mean This:

Mine is set that way & sfc & dism work.

    At least sfc worked.

Do you have dism set to get components from windows update ?

I mean that plus changing the registry:

    Change the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

    Key: EnableLUA

    Value data: 0

Note: This prevents Metro/Modern apps from working.
