SFC and DISM problems

  1. #21

    Files are identical in

    C:\Windows\WinSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-luainstaller_31bf3856ad364e35_6.2.9200.16384_none_718018daf20f86f3\luainstall.dll

    and C:\Windows\System32\

    I copied it there anyway.

Need to reboot then will run sfc.

Here is the new sfc output, error info only:

Okay, so looking over the log files I can see that you initially started with this..

    C:\Windows\System32\luainstall.dll --a---- 50176 bytes F257056A1044B31F6FE9C67E393ED558
    C:\Windows\SysWOW64\luainstall.dll --a---- 39424 bytes 902B161E360563DED4F3099C55062411

After the file copy you ended up with this..

    C:\Windows\System32\luainstall.dll --a---- 39424 bytes 902B161E360563DED4F3099C55062411
    C:\Windows\SysWOW64\luainstall.dll --a---- 39424 bytes 902B161E360563DED4F3099C55062411

The file within the System32 directory should be this..

    C:\Windows\System32\luainstall.dll --a---- 50176 bytes FFFF498E680E92052683AAFDFAE4D981

This is the only file which matches the same size & MD5 hash from my computer which seems to be correct. I'm not sure how so many files are coming up with the wrong MD5 hash because everything else matches on my computer.

Are you using Win 8.1 Pro?

Here are the current files from my computer..

    C:\Windows\System32\luainstall.dll --a---- 50176 bytes FFFF498E680E92052683AAFDFAE4D981
    C:\Windows\SysWOW64\luainstall.dll --a---- 41472 bytes 9447A854BB172D7E2110172568C7DD88

Not to intrude but I can confirm my Win 8.1 Pro files are the same size as ectechs if that might be any help. Just an FYI.

    C:\Windows\System32\luainstall.dll 50176 bytes
    C:\Windows\SysWOW64\luainstall.dll 41472 bytes

The file within the System32 directory should be this..

    C:\Windows\System32\luainstall.dll --a---- 50176 bytes FFFF498E680E92052683AAFDFAE4D981
That makes no sense. If I copied from SysWOW64 to system32 then the file is going to be the same as the one from SysWOW64, which is 41472 bytes, and that is what it now is.

Are you using Win 8.1 Pro?
    No, Windows 8 Pro X64.

Correct, it does not make sense because nowhere in your log files does it show you have luainstall.dll as being 41472 bytes in size.

My computer on the other hand does show luainstall.dll as being 41472 bytes in size. Although I am running Windows 8.1 Enterprise. The size discrepancy might be an indication that the security descriptor is wrong.

Run chkdsk /R on reboot to ensure the integrity of the file system.

After that has completed, run DISM.bat once more and post a fresh sfcdetails log along with a fresh SystemLook log.

Sorry, I was looking at the wrong data. As you said
Okay, so looking over the log files I can see that you initially started with this..

    C:\Windows\System32\luainstall.dll --a---- 50176 bytes F257056A1044B31F6FE9C67E393ED558
    C:\Windows\SysWOW64\luainstall.dll --a---- 39424 bytes 902B161E360563DED4F3099C55062411

After the file copy you ended up with this..

    C:\Windows\System32\luainstall.dll --a---- 39424 bytes 902B161E360563DED4F3099C55062411
    C:\Windows\SysWOW64\luainstall.dll --a---- 39424 bytes 902B161E360563DED4F3099C55062411
So I copied the SysWOW64 file of 39424 bytes over the system32 file of 50176 and ended up with a file of 39424 bytes which is what it would have to be if the copy worked, but it still doesn't match your size which may be okay as I am on Windows 8, not 8.1.

As for security descriptors, I did have to change access rights to the file so would that have an effect?

I don't know about you but this if fun for me. I love working problems and will keep at this as long as you don't lose interest.

I agree Rich, this is why I always like to look at real data because it gives you a better perspective. The goal in these situations is to come to a solid solution, in hopes it will help others.

So, with that being said lets move on..

Okay, I'll need a fresh SystemLook log so I know where we stand. Also if you could run Collect.bat as Admin and attach the folder to your next post.

You will need to right click the Logs Folder on the Desktop and select Send To > Compressed Folder.

I restored luainstall.exe to SysWOW64 and system32 yesterday so we're back to square one as I was not sure where we were.
