    refresh

I read an article that advised doing the following.

" To refresh my pc 8.1, just make your own recovery option.
    run cmd as admin
    type recimg /createimage c:\refreshimage "

Before I do that, what happens after this runs?

    Hello Peter,

This would be for a custom refresh image. If you create a custom refresh image, it will be used whenever you refresh Windows instead of the default refresh. The tutorial below will give you more details though.

    Hello Brink
I see and am not sure I want to wander away from the default. I am glad you pointed that out.
I have Win 8.1 Pro after coming through the store so you know the foul issues I have engaged along the way.
Like so many others, I have no product key. I have read the tutorials about how to install with 8 and 8.1 iso's at the ready.
At the present all is well but I read that I need media for a refresh; I am fortunate that I was sent it otherwise I would really be stuck- I feel for those who are not as fortunate. I hope the 8.1 is in the store if I choose to go that route as I read that too was fouled up or missing. It seems I am depending upon my images to remain stable.
    Thank you for your advice,
    Peter

Keeping a separate system image is also always good.

A custom refresh image is actually perfect for your situation since it would restore Windows to how it was including your apps and settings for when the refresh image was created. You could also always delete or unregister the custom refresh image to use the default refresh at anytime though.

    Hello Brink
Could you please make any corrections necessary?run cmd as admin (use the path in admin prompt C:\Windows\system32path )
mkdir C:\RefreshImage and hit enter= this creates a new directorycalled refresh Image in the C drive called C:\RefreshImage\Custom Refresh.win
then type recimg /createimagec:\refreshimage after cmd prompt + hitenter+ this starts the image to place in the folder, takes a long time.

After go to C:\RefreshImage to see the new file

    Thank you
    Peter

    Hey Peter,

Sorry for the late reply. You just about got it down pat.

The mkdir C:\RefreshImage command would only create a C:\RefreshImage folder.

The recimg -CreateImage C:\RefreshImage (you missed the space in your post above) command would create a CustomRefresh.wim file in the C:\RefreshImage folder.

Yeah, it can take a while for it to finish.

Peter, do a recimg /showcurrent fist so you see what the current setting is. On my Win 8 (not 8.1) system, I get:

There is no active custom recovery image.
    Error Code - 0x80070490

I'm running recimg /createimage d:\Recimage now (you don't have to create the target folder ahead of time, recimg takes care of that). It is painfully slow compared to a normal image backup with Acronis or Macrium though.

It's been running for about 10 minutes now and is only at 2%:

    >recimg /createimage d:\Recimage
    Source OS location: C:
    Recovery image path: d:\Recimage\CustomRefresh.wim
Creating recovery image. Press [ESC] to cancel.
    Initializing
    100%
    Creating snapshot
    100%
Writing image (this may take a while)
    2%

Edit: Picked up speed a bit, jumped to 11% in 1 or 2 minutes.

    Hi Brink + Rich
I am sending you the tutorial I watched and hope I did it right so you can view it if you wish.
I know you know more than they do but thought you might find it interesting
I will try to put your notes together so I can get this 8.1 refresh customized with your information.
    Thank you
    Peter

The spacing is fine in that command.

You could also refer to the tutorial below from here for what we posted about on how to do it.

Yours is better by far thanks.

Do both default and custom refresh clear out clutter or just take a snap shot in as much an image would do?
