FIle history stuck in "Restore in progress"

I have build a new pc, went to turn on File History and set it up and it began to restore from an old build. It is not restoring (and i don't need it too) but it is stuck. It won't turn off, or finish or fail. Been weeks now.

The location does exist, but regardless, I have deleted the files already.

Any clue on how to force it to be clean config w/o re-installing Windows?

Ya, this drove me nuts as just realized this problem on a brand new build and OEM 8.1. And I couldn't find anyone having a similar problem. I did some more googling around and came up with a place to look for the problem, as I figured it was some kind of configuration issue. BTW, this new build I did is only 3 weeks old, and have no idea how it happened.

Anyway, fwiw, I went in to:

    c:\Users\<ME>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory\Configuration\

and then deleted the files in that folder.

I'm not sure if it was needed, but I also went in to:

    c:\Users\<ME>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\History

and deleted the filehistory files there. I have no idea why they were there as I had never previously started up file history before.

I rebooted and File History, after it searched for available drives, works fine.

I'm not saying go do this :-), I'm saying what worked for me. Actually, I came back here and created an account today to pass this on, as it's lonely out there sometimes if you can't find an answer!

    good luck,

FWIW, I only deleted the config file (all I had) in the:

    c:\Users\<ME>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory\Configuration\

folder. Rebooted and it was ready to enable etc. Thanks a million for taking the time to register and reply, that is what makes forums so incredible, peeps like you!

    Cool! Glad I could help.

Ya, kinda figured deleting the files in the "History" directory wasn't particularly necessary, but since I had never turned on File History before on that PC, I didn't care. If I did have File History working BEFORE this problem came up, I would NOT have deleted these files as now looking on another PC, looks like they are some kind of calendar indexing reference. Odd the history only goes back 2 weeks (as I have file history to save forever), but anyway...

So, my point is, I would start with deleting only the config file in:

    c:\Users\<ME>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory\Configuration\

and if someone contemplated deleting the files in \History, back them up first, just in case.

    Onward :-)
