I have a Lenovo Z710 laptop(see spec's)and want to make a recovery USB and also setup a backup system. This is a new machine and I don't want to make a mess of it, so I wanted to get the best advice I could before I did anything to it.

I have a 32GB USB drive to make the Recovery on.
Lenovo refers me to this method to make a Recovery USB :Methodology to create Recovery Media and reload a Lenovo Think system with Microsoft Windows 8 preload

Is this a good way to do this or is there a better way ?

I also need to setup a backup system, what is the best program to use for this, paid or not ?

I have a 1TB HDD in an external enclosure with 3.0 USB cable to use for the backup's.

Ztruker,
Thank's for your reply, can you further explain the second part ?

Is secure boot on all Win 8.1 ? How do I find out if I have UEFI ?

It's part of the computer, not the OS. UEFI is like BIOS. I have a new Lenovo IdeaCenter K450. [DEL]To boot the created flash drive, I had to do as I described:

Under Boot Tab
Change Boot mode to Legacy, USB Boot should be enabled

Under Security
Secure Boot Has to Be disabled[/DEL]

You press F1 to get to the Setup (aka BIOS) screen.
I believe F12 takes you to the boot selection screen.

What you described is for testing the USB I will make ?

If the OS becomes unusable, then I will be able to plug in the USB and the machine will boot directly from it ?

Yes, the USB flash drive you create following the Guide you posted the link to. I used a 16GB flash drive and it has 2.7GB free now.

If I use the 32GB drive can I put anything else on it or is it better to have only the Lenovo Recovery on it ?

Also, what is a good backup program to use ?

Yes, that way works and creates a bootable flash drive to use for recovery. I suggest you try booting it after you create it to learn how as you will have to disable Secure Boot and enable Emulation in UEFI setup.

I have Lenovo G580 laptop with Windows 8 preinstalled.

You don't need to change UEFI firmware (BIOS) settings, because Windows 8 Recovery USB Flash Drive is UEFI Boot Mode and Secure Boot compatible (as shown in figure below).

1. Insert the USB Recovery media into an available USB port.
2. Restart or turn on the Lenovo and select F12 (interactive Boot menu) at the Lenovo Logo.

Methodology to create Recovery Media and reload a Lenovo Think system with Microsoft Windows 8 preload

NO need to DISABLE Secure Boot as the method is signed by Microsoft for use with Windows 8, uEFI, GPT & Secure Boot.

That's very weird. I just set BIOS back to default, Secure Boot enabled and Compatibility disabled. I used F12 to get to the boot menu, selected the flash drive and it booted correctly. I know it didn't do this before but I must have done something wrong.

So, as genect and theog said, it will boot with no BIOS setup changes needed. Just use F12 to get to teh boot menu and off you go.

Sorry for the bogus information. I've corrected my prior posts.

I was able to talk Lenovo into sending me the recovery disc set (6 discs) after complaining I couldn't get the flash drive to boot.

I tried to make it and after maybe 20 min. or so it said it was unable to create it.

It flashed something on the screen about scan something, I could not catch it all.

I tried doing this from a 3.0 USB slot if that makes a difference.

I tried to make it and after maybe 20 min. or so it said it was unable to create it.

It flashed something on the screen about scan something, I could not catch it all.

I tried doing this from a 3.0 USB slot if that makes a difference.

Update:

I tried to make the Recovery Media USB using a Micro SD card with a USB 2.0 adapter again.

This time I used a 2.0 USB slot on the computer.

It gave the same message almost to the end; unable to create Recovery Drive; Then; Scan drive now; clicked on it; it displayed repair drive; clicked on this and it said drive is ready for use.

How do I test this without doing any damage to the OS ?

How far can I go in testing before it changes anything and still be able to cancel it ?
