I deleted it without difficulty (I first backed it up on a different drive), and the computer still seems to work fine, even after a reboot.
my C drive shows that I have gained back that much free space.
what was that giant system file all about?

its a sys file, but google shows no results for the particular name. it is an extremely long name that seems to be composed of random characters:
    {012fa306-5854-11e2-af9b-806e6f6e6963}.sys

Dis you ever have major disk problems that you fixed with chkdsk? As I recall chkdsk will create files like this when it finds orphan files or folders on the hard drive. You can look at it with a disk editor to see if it contains any valuable data that was "lost" due to file system errors.
