BITS is waking my laptop in the middle of the night

BITS is waking my laptop in the middle of the night and my laptop is remaining awake! I don't want to disable it, I have read it's not a good idea. Anyone have a similar problem. My power settings are right, even IF this wakes it.....it should be going to sleep in 15 min, but according to event viewer it's not.

    Hello Nate,

If you haven't already, you might check this to see if it may be a device responsible for waking the laptop.

Devices - See Devices that are able to Wake Up the Computer - Windows 7 Help Forums

Devices - Allow or Prevent to Wake Up Computer - Windows 7 Help Forums

    Hope this helps some,

I ran the cmd prompt to see what devices could wake it. It said NONE. Thanks for the thought, but this is a strange one.

What does your wake source event log say?
Since Windows Update uses BITS, you might check to see if it may be Automatic Maintenance set to wake the PC.

You are correct. It is the maintenance settings. It's set to wake the PC at 6 PM. Not 3:40 AM.

That helps a lot though. I will try some different settings. I also can't seem to figure out why the PC would not simply go back to sleep. Thanks a lot for your help Brink! Windows 8 isn't much different from 7 but every PC has it's mood.

    You're most welcome Nate.

Normally, it should go back to sleep when Automatic Maintenance has finished running (could take around a few hours or so), and after the idle time you have set in your power plan before going to sleep or hibernate.

You might check your Windows Update Log in the Windows directory. It should have entries concerning the Background Transfers and perhaps indicate some type of problem.

Look for the WindowsUpdate.log file in the Windows directory and copy it to the desktop and open with Notepad. There should be entries about waking the computer, and BITS actions, and some other things. If you want to attach the last few days of the log entries, we may see something.

I changed the time for maintenance to a time an hour before I normally turn on my computer, but how can I have this done while I am using it? I have never had this problem with Windows 7 before. Is this new to Windows 8?

For anyone else having this problem, Windows 8 has been changed. It has a checkbox to let BITS wake the computer. I missed it at first but it's there.
