friends, there are a number of us looking for a way to stop the annoying status-check of optical drive that seems to occur at roughly 2 minute intervals. This thread explains the issue well, but maddeningly the knowledgeable responder didn't nail the process. I would like to find a way to curtail it at the source.

thanks for your expertise!

I had this exact problem and it drove me absolutely crazy like Chinese water torture. Even when empty every 2 to 15 minutes I would hear the DVD drive go click-click like it was checking itself. The same kind of click-click you would normally hear when you power on the system. Other then that the drive worked fine. I tried everything and could not find any process or task that was causing it. Had all the latest firmware, BIOS and chipset updates.

How I fixed it: The DVD drive had SATA interface. My motherboard had unused IDE interface. I bought a cheap IDE CD-DVD writer and put it on the IDE interface and never heard the clicking again. To me it seemed the problem is some kind of periodic SATA bus reset/scan is happening and the DVD drive responds with a click.

This status checking is likely done by a device driver that does much more, not a process.

there isn't a device driver as one normally [these days] thinks of one. just a generic old handler - the ODD vendors themselves do not issue any drivers.

hey PSRS - now THAT's extreme!! I thought I was OCD... lol. this one sleeps pretty well if I just put a blank in there.
what does NOT work is to put a very old Led Zeppelin CD in there!! ha...
