    No System Restore Points

Just thought I'd do a system restore point to get over a problem in another thread here and - there aren't any!

    Shouldn't windows automatically make them?

I've had this problem for a year with windows 8 (now 8.1) and I think I even had it with 7. Before that it never seemed to be a problem.

    Hello Trevor,

I assume that you had system protection turned on for your C: drive for Windows.

If so, double check to see how much maximum disk space is set to be used for restore points on C:.

    Hope this helps for now,
    Shawn

Despite enable automatic system restore as per your post when I checked today I had no system restore points at all, which has been the default for me on 8.1 8 and windows 7 for the last couple of years. I forget to do one and the next thing I know is I have a problem and have to reinstall windows.

Just for grins hit Winkey-q and type services. Hit enter to open Services applet. See if Volume Shadow Copy is enabled or disabled. If it is not disabled but set to Manual, try changing it to Automatic (Delayed Start) and see if the auto restore points will fire.

Edit: If it is disabled, set it to enabled, then Automatic (Delayed Start) and click the start link at the top left to start the service.

Enabling automatic system restore in Task Scheduler will not work unless you also have System Protection turned on for the C: drive.

Sorry that you had to reinstall Windows.

Yes system protection is on for my 2 HD's but despite this there were no restore points until I just made one manually.

Restore points are normally only automatically created by default just before significant system events, such as the installation of some programs, device driver, Windows Update, and by using a scheduled task once every seven days if no other restore points were created in the previous seven days.

Did you have your maximum storage size set to be large enough to keep a few restore points saved on the drive?

Do you use any utility programs that may have deleted any restore points?

Do you dual boot with another OS?

I had the maximum size available as 100% of the disk space so have dropped that to 20% for each drive. I run Ccleaner regularly . I wasn't aware it deleted restore points but will have to check. I have no dual boots configured.

Luckily, CCleaner doesn't delete restore points by default. You would have to manually delete them in CCleaner.

Solved No System Restore points in Performance & Maintenance
I've been running Windows 8 since 10/27 and just noticed there were no System Restore points. Doesn't Windows 8 automatically create them when a significant event occurs, like Windows Update? I created one manually but would like to see Win 8 create them.
