Windows 8.1 won't stay awake, hibernates after 5 minutes

My PC ignores all the power plan settings and hibernates after approximately 5 minutes without input. The computer also ignores active background processes.

My Windows Home Server backups are failing because the PC wakes up for the scheduled backup, but then ignores the process and goes to sleep in the middle of the backup. It also means that I cannot listen to internet radio or watch video unless I keep the PC awake with keyboard/mouse input.

This problem appears to have started after I installed the 8.1 update for Windows. I've tried adjusing all the power plan settings, creating a new power plan, enabling and disabling screen savers, etc. The computer simply ignores anything else and hibernates after 5 minutes.

BIOS is up to date, and everything was working OK before the 8.1 upgrade. Any suggestions gratefully received!

Hmmm, you have the opposite of what most of us have . . . See the thread on Windows 8.1 Refuses to Sleep . . . There's something in there about Hibernate, but I'm not at home and this laptop still has Windows 7, so I can't look to see where it is for you. I can, however, show you what I'm talking about in Windows 7.

I may be killed for this, but I'm going to send four pictures . . . Open Control Panel and click on Power Options.

Click on "Change when the computer sleeps

Click on the plus sign beside Sleep

Open all of the options under sleep. I'm betting you're going to find that Hybrid sleep or Hibernate are set to five minutes. Remember that this is a laptop and things will look different because it can be operated with the battery or plugged in.

    Good luck!

Thanks, but my sleep settings are correctly set - sleep timeout: 15 minutes, hibernate: 20 minutes. The problem I have is that the power settings are simply being ignored. Note in my original answer that the hibernation I am experiencing also overrides running processes that should keep the PC awake (e.g. my Windows Home Server backup). This worked correctly before my 8.1 upgrade.
My system is just going into hibernation after 5 minutes or so, regardless of settings or activity, unless I am using the mouse or keyboard.

I hate when things don't work when and how I'm expected them to. Anyway, I have Windows 8 Pro N and I want it to shut down instead of hibernate. I made a shortcut: "C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe -t 00 -s" and whenever I press it, it reads "shutting down" on a blue screen, after that it turns...
Amazing... I searched for "sleep" here and found the "Windows 8.1 refuses to sleep" thread, which is still going strong after almost 800 posts, talking about the exact opposite problem to the one I'm having! (Now, needless to say, I haven't read the entirety of that thread - yet; could someone...

Unable to awake from sleep in Drivers & Hardware
I have one of the newer Vaio VPCSAs. When it comes to wake up for sleeping the machine gets stuck in the off state. I end up having to pop out the battery (which requires removing screws) to get a hard reset. For now I've setup the machine to go into hibernate rather than sleep. Anyone have this...
