Hello wingman,

Yes, that DISM command is used to attempt to repair the component store. The component store is what SFC uses to replace any corrupted or modified system files it finds to repair them from.
The DISM command is only available in Windows 8/8.1, and not in previous versions of Windows such as Windows 7. For Windows 7, you would need to use the System Update Readiness Tool instead.
Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

Yes and the component store should not be getting corrupted so easily. To me, this is a fatal flaw or a weakness in Windows 8 and 8.1 which should be fixed.

I've already fixed several of these problems using those commands where the wireless adaptor would just vanish from Device Manager. The only reason I knew how to fix it was because I had the same problem, twice.

In fact these commands should be run before upgrading to 8.1, this will avoid problems with the update and I've seen plenty of them.

Seems to work best running the sfc /scannow command first then reboot and run the DISM repair command, reboot again then check with sfc to see that all files have been repaired.
