Hiberfil.sys

Running Windows 8.0 and noticed my Hiberfil.sys file is 12.7GB

I'm running my OS on an SSD and would prefer not to have this space used up if possible. However I do want to keep Windows 8's built-in fast boot.

Is it possible to reduce or remove the Hiberfil.sys file without adversely affecting hybrid boot?

Yes it is, but only if you don't intend to use the following two features:

Hibernate
Fast Startup (hybrid boot)

Both require thw hiberfil.sys file; however, if you don't need either, you can enter the following command (via an elevated command prompt) to immediately recover all that 12.7Gbs of space:

powercfg /h off

Don't worry, that command is instantly reversible via powercfg /h on.

Also, you have the option to just "shrink" that hiberfil.sys file if you only intend to use fast startup (hybrid boot):

powercfg /h /size 50

That alone should get you between 4-6GBs of space back (I'm assume you have 16GBs of RAM installed).

Anyway, I hope all of the information I have provided has been helpful for you to make a solid decision regarding this matter.

Good luck to you.

Arghh, okay now I see another huge file C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\CatalogCorruptionLog\Data\Applications\Windows\Windows.edb that is nearly 3GB

What would this one be for, and can I delete it?

That is the search index. You could index less locations (defined on indexing options) to reduce the size or even turn off indexing and delete it. You'll only find things in search that are indexed though.

You can also move it to another drive if you want - again on indexing options under advanced.

How about responding to my first recommendation? I took a fair amount of time to explain that to you and now you seem to be just "jumping by and onto the next issue." However, since I did put forth a fair amount of time to answer your first question in detail, I would certainly like to hear back from you on my recommendation and "Argh" doesn't explain anything.

Wow, self entitled much? I clicked the "thanks" button in your post and commented saying "thanks I'll try it"

Do you yell at every person you try to help?

Hello Aeed,

First of all, thank your for that acknowledgement; however, a written response would have been very much appreciated. With that said, it seems like you are intent on reducing the size of your installation footprint and there are many additional things you can do to dramatically reduce same. Just for your reference, here is my installation footprint for Win 8.1:

The above also includes 25 installed programs. So, now, at least you know "how low you can go."

Well thanks. I did, however, use the quick reply before loading the page, so I did not see your reply until after I had posted the second post. I'm doing about 20 things at once right now (got a ton of windows and browser tabs open) so didn't get around to modifying my post.

Well, I don't look for a rep every time I make a suggestion. I tend to focus on the issue at hand and wait for a response from the OP and I generally get a response other than "Argh" which told me nothing about your intent with regard to my detailed suggestion. Again, I do not look for a rep immediately after each detailed recommendation; however I do expect some type of response to my specific recommendation. And if you consider my request for a response as "yelling" then I consider your lack of response as "lazy and inconsiderate."

Hi Aeed,
It is a Search index database as described by adamf. I have seen cases where this file can grow over time and up to many gb's (50, 100 GB ) in size then it will cause your Windows to be sluggish when it tries to rebuild the index for such a huge file. Myself, that is the first thing I turned off (Windows Search). If you seldom use the Search feature, you can turn off this service and delete this file (Windows.edb), it will not hurt anything, you can do the search without it, just take a little longer.
Cheers
