How to Make my Windows 8 Startup Faster?

When I put Windows 8 in sleep mode (yes sleep mode...I'm not shutting it off), and I turn it on, it sometimes takes up to 5 minutes to respond to any input. I'm wondering what I can check to make sure the minimal apps/programs are running, and there are no unnecessary memory hogs churning in the background? How can I test it, monitor it, and optimize it?

Also, has anyone had any issues with Firefox sucking up tons and tons of RAM? When I look in the Task Manager, and sort by Memory, Firefox is ALWAYS at the top of the list. Is there any way to regulate the max memory settings for Firefox?

The first thing you can do is open an elevated command prompt and make sure you have the S3 sleep state available:

Type powercfg -a

Note that I am using a desktop and I have hibernation disabled. Please post a screenshot of your results.

Good question. 4GB. I can add more. I was hoping to find a free solution. Maybe I need to ask Santa Claus for some RAM chips.

if u want to make your startup more fast then u have to setup your windows using UFFI Bios system

does your motherboard supports UFFI Bios ?

I'm not sure. How can I tell? Also, isn't there an easy way to control what processes start when the computer boots up? If I got to Task manager > Startup, I can see that there are a few items listed there. It seems like nothing is having a negative impact on the performance, but I don't believe that. There is something slowing down my system.

Also, I get things like this popping up a lot.

There are several other messages like that; similar but different (I don't see those right now so I can't take a screen shot). All that stuff comes from Firefox. I know some of the slowness, or maybe all of it, comes from Firefox.

It seems you have a lots of crap starting up with windows, start disabling the ones that are trouble or you do not really need. Non-responding tasks take way more time.

I have 17 processes that start when Windows starts. According to the task Manager, 7 have no impact on the startup process, 9 processes have a low impact on the startup process, and only 1, Windows Host Process has a medium impact on the startup process, but it seems like that's pretty important, so I don't want to eliminate that one.

I think most, and probably all, of the slowness comes from Firefox. Has anyone experienced this before? Does anyone know how to manage Firefox effectively? It seems like mine is pretty out of control.

Thanks everyone!!

You could also maybe invest in a small SSD (or just get the SSD and not more RAM), that makes start-up noticeably faster if you have the OS installed on that.

PC used mostly for home theater and gaming.
There's "Mozilla Maintenance Service" in services, maybe you could disable it and see if that makes some difference.

Thanks everyone. Maybe SSD is the way to go. I had an option to get that 1 year ago when I first got my laptop. The only problem was that it was small and expensive. However, time is money. If I sit around all the time waiting for this to work, that takes away from many other things that I could be doing.

Thanks everyone!!

On a COLD start, there is a default delay of 30 seconds. That can be changed to just 3 seconds, thus saving 27 seconds just in the boot delay time. That's found in "MSCONFIG > Boot.ini"

If you want to limit the number of Services running in the background (SERVICES not Programs) then you need to check with the "Black Viper" website. BV has been publishing a list of all services, all the way back to XP, that can be either Disabled totally or put into Manual start mode. Fewer services running, means more ram and CPU time for your programs.

FF? There is a whole sheet of tweaks to FF to make it faster and more efficient. Just Google "make Firefox faster".
Several of the older tweaks are now a part of FF, by default.

A fast and efficient PC is not Rocket Science, but it does require a bit of research and work. Eh?
