Windows 8.1 System Image Backup Failed

After upgrading to Windows 8.1, System Image Backup failed resulting in
    the following message:

“The backup failed. There is not enough space to create the volume shadow copy on the storage location. … (0x80780119)”

However, there was enough free space in the external hard disk: 762.82 GB.

Windows Disk Management, and other tools, provided the following information about the partition structure of Disk 0 (238.35 GB):

Type File System Capacity Free Space
Recovery NTFS 499 MB 499 MB
EFI System Partition FAT32 300 MB 300 MB
Microsoft Reserved Partition Other 128 MB
    Recovery (\\?\Volume{792d...) NTFS 350 MB 350 MB
    Recovery (\\?\Volume{8b75...) NTFS 350 MB 350 MB
    Recovery (SAMSUNG_REC2) NTFS 19.72 GB 19.72 GB
    Recovery (SAMSUNG_REC) NTFS 1.00 GB 1.00 GB
Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition NTFS 216.16 GB 144.76 GB

I am suspicious about having two 350 MB recovery partitions.

Any ideas on how to solve this problem?

    Hello netnative,

This is a bug with the new Windows 8.1 (GA) where the "system recovery" partition not having enough free space.

Latest Win 8.1 ISO "Breaks" System Image Functionality

The recommended option would be to use a free 3rd party program like Macrium Reflect instead.

Those OEM systems are really strange so it is hard to tell what or which partition seems to be causing the problem. When you do the image, it will list the partitions being backed up, can you show which ones are being backed up?

You might also try opening an administrative command and running the command reagentc /info and copy and paste the results. Check it for personal info, but it might give some insight.

Did you do your update from a Samsung version or from the Windows Store, if there even is a Samsung version?

But considering the complexity of your install, I would have to agree with Brink about the best solution.

As you have two of the new update Recovery Partitions, do you install 8.1 x2 times.

I have a situation on a Samsung very similar to netnative. 7 partitions in total. My first attempt at installing 8.1 failed and things got rolled back to 8.0. A few days later i tried again and it updated, but I can no longer make a system image. I now use Macrium Reflect free to do that and it works fine. Not Windows though. I contacted Microsoft about this and for a one time incident of $99 the tech said he could fix this. I don't think so. Seems like there is no fix at this time. The whole upgrade experience has been very frustrating. I don't know what to do with these partitions. One of them doesn't have enough space for a shadow copy. The disk management sofware shows only 6 partitions, all except c:\ are 100% free space. Something is clearly wrong with this picture.

Hello Nichollstj, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Unfortunately, it's for the same reason as above:

There is a fix for this. As brink said it's a bug in 8.1. It could be with any of the partitions not just the recovery. For volumes 500MB and less you need at least 50MB of free space for volume shadow copy. Volumes larger than 500MB you need at least 320MB of free space. Before you start messing with partitions i honestly recommend backing all of your data up manually first. It does seem to be more than not with the recovery partition.

I would never use ANY type of Microsoft backup.
In the case of making system images, 3rd party imaging tools are much better.
My choice has always been Acronis. .... been using it for about 10 years.
It always worked! (it does Linux systems, Windows Server and every version of Windows)

Never was a fan of Paragon, Macrium, Ghost or anything else.
