Thanks for the update, Nemix. I've also switched from 8.0 to 8.1 and disabled Fast Startup to make it work. Wonder what Microsoft changed there to cause all these old laptops to freeze brutally at startup.

Windows 8 is more forgiving with drivers and software being based off Windows 7 SP1 with a newer kernel updated for the addition of Metro UI.

Early betas of Windows 8 looked pretty much identical to Windows 7 with Start Menu and Aero Glass still intact either by default or enabled through Registry Editor.

Windows 8.1 however is based off Windows 8 with a kernel that is two generations newer than Windows 7 SP1 thus why drivers and software optimized for Windows 7 that previously worked in Windows 8 might not work in Windows 8.1 anymore especially in the case of crucial system drivers ex.: video, system bus, power controller (for some laptops)...

Hi, this is my first post here.
I know this is an old thread, but it's almost exactly about my problem.
My HDD is partitioned with MBR.
My BIOS is in BIOS mode, not UEFI.
I'm using ALL 8.1 drivers, no 7 drivers. Downloaded the 8.1 drivers from the official HP driver download page.
I had no problems when I was using Windows 8.
But ever since I upgraded to 8.1, the computer freezes at the Windows logo while starting up.
If i force a shut down by pressing and holding the power button, and then press the power button again, Windows 8.1 boots up fine.
I have no problem with "Sleep" or "Hibernate", but starting up from cold causes Windows 8.1 to lock up in the Windows logo.

Disabling "Fast Startup" instantly resolves this issue. I have been using this computer with Fast Startup disabled for the last 6 months, not a single lockup. But today, I turned Fast Startup back on, and it locked up again.

Why's this happening? Once again, m using all 8.1 drivers.
Is this happening because of my legacy BIOS?
Is this because of MBR? I just have 2 partitions on the hard drive and the hard drive is 500GB in size, no point using GPT..

It's most probably a driver issue. If your PC/laptop has official 8.1 support from HP then you should contact them.

Hi, I restored UEFI to default settings and after that I couldn't get into Windows anymore, I just get into UEFI all the time after every reboot. No Windows. So I started to try and change things and finally found out that Fast Boot enabled is the culprit. If I disable it, I can get into...
