PC won't shutdown or restart occasionally

Sometimes when shutting down or restarting my PC (Dell Latitude E6500), it freezes and hangs right after the screen goes black. The hard drive activity indicator turns off and the laptop doesn't shut down. I've tried waiting a bit to see if anything happens, but no. It just hangs in that state. I then have to manually shut it down by holding down the power button for 5 seconds.

Again, it does not happen on every shutdown or restart, but it does happen often.

What causes this and how can I fix it? Thanks for help.

I would start off by checking the Event Logs for errors or warnings that are time-coincident with you hanged shutdown and post a screenshot like so:

Good luck.

Good luck.

Unfortunately, there is nothing in the Event Viewer that corresponds with my issues time-wise. In fact, there aren't even any warnings or errors from the time my system last failed to shut down or restart.

OK, so I would next try to disable all startup programs to eliminate the possibility that there might be some 8.1 conflict that is causing a particular program to hang on shut down. Unfortunately, this may be another Win 8.1 specific issue related to your specific hardware but you have to start somewhere, so that would be my next step.

Solved it for me

This has been bugging me since I upgraded to 8.1 after google for most of the day I found that it might have something to do with Hybrid Shutdown although I could find no setting in PC settings I did find the command to do it, you have to open a command prompt as administrator (I used powershell im trying to learn a bit about it) and type in this

powercfg -h off

I hope this works for you to
