System Restore and System Refresh not working completely!

    Hello to all,

A month back I accidentally deleted the wow6432 node from my registry under system_user. I believe this is the root of all my problems. Once I did that, my toshiba c885 D 64 bit would not boot. I forced the computer to shut down and pressed f12 to get to the system recovery options. I then restored to a point before my blunder. Well, my laptop worked for a while and then magically the screen goes black and will not reboot. I did sestem restore a few more times since I could get a little bit of work done in between restoring and the screen turning black again. After I was fed up with having to run system restore every other day, I decided to run system refresh to keep my files but reset everything else. After restoring I am getting the same problem and find myself again running system restore every other day just to keep working.

My questions are if I completely reinstall windows 8 and start from scratch, will this definitely solve the problem? I thought system refresh would have worked, so I'm not sure. Also, are there any other available options for me to fix my computer without starting from scratch?

Thanks so much in advance! -Aaron

    Hi awrontherise,

Since you did not provide your specs, all my suggestions are just speculative in nature; however, I can tell you that a clean install will fix all system software corruption but if you also have hardware and/or driver issues they will have to be addressed separately. So, based on what you have told us so far, I would recommend this as your first step:

    Repair Install Windows 8

Now, if the above doesn't work, you may have to take this route:

    Clean Install - Windows 8

    Good luck.

Sorry, I ave a toshiba satellite c885d laptop with 4gigs of ram and 500Mb storage running windows 8 64 bit.

I recently upgraded my graphics card drivers to amd catalyst 13.9, could it be I am having driver issues? I followed all of AMD's suggesting for upgrading, I at least THINK it installed successfully. Is there any way to check if this problem is driver related?

I never know when the screen will turn black and fail to reboot causing me to have to run system restore, I wish I could see somehow what is triggering it.

It could very well be a graphics driver issue, and after you do a system restore, maybe Windows Update is automatically updating your driver again. Do you have Windows Update set to automatically install drivers as well as normal Windows Updates as well?

Try this: Do a system restore and get back to the "all is well" state. Immediately check you graphics driver version like so:

Then, when the problem starts again, check to see if your graphics driver has "changed." If so, Windows Update is the culprit.

    Good luck.

I found that my graphics driver is still showing up as version 13.1.... instead of 13.9 which I upgraded to on my own. Are you saying I should have just let windows update take care of updating that driver.

I though that I needed the new drivers to run a certain program but as the program is working currently and my drivers are showing up as pre 13.9 version, I guess I didn't need it at all.

I am about ready to try the repair install windows 8, though i don't know why I don't just go for the clean install windows 8, I am sick of restoring so often. I want to only have to reinstall all of my programs once more, but I am scared clean install won't work if the issue is driver related. I guess the only way to find out is to try, I have already stored all of my important files in a skydrive.

I found there are some additional problems, that while mylaptop is currently working, I cannot change user settings or run automatic repair. Is this information useful in determining whether or not drivers may be the problem?
