Cannot access backup files

Brink, I hope you can help me. My prior pc had some major issues (win7) while I had an external WD backup drive attached. During my troubleshooting I had reinstalled win7 and hooked my backup drive back onto the system. At the time I had not taken the time to restore or take ownership of the backup drive/files. It ran fine for a while with backups occurring regularly when finally it had major motherboard issues at which point I gave up and purchased a new Dell PC with Win8 (one I'm using now). After setting it up I proceeded to connect the external backup drive and restore the folder I really needed as it contained all the photos, files, music, etc from the old pc. After doing so I was able to open/view the files that were backed up on my old pc AFTER I had reinstalled win7 but could not view the older backed up files/images etc. I then used the take ownership steps in this tread but this did not appear to work either. When I attempt to open the restored files/folders from my prior pc that are older I only get a default image of the win8 icon for that file. Can you help me get access to all my backed up files please?

Good question. I had hooked up the drive to my old pc about 3+ years ago and don't recall if I used windows or the WD software. I'm thinking windows but here are the top files on the backup. Let me know what you think:

1. RP-PC (name of my old pc, 350GB of 1TB in size)
2. WindowImageBackup (this seems to be the image of the old pc?, but says size is 0 and says I don't have permission when I click on it)
3. MediaID.bin file

1. Could be from Windows Backup if when you open the RP-PC (computer name) folder and it has a Backup Set YYYY-MM-DD HHMMSS dated folder in it that contains your backup files.

2. WindowsImageBackup is definitely from a created system image. The tutorial below can help show you how to manually extract files from it using Disk Management.

3. When a Windows Backup is created on a volume on a hard disk, a file called mediaid.bin is added to the root of the volume. Your backup folder is there as well. If you move your backup folder but forget to move the mediaid.bin file, Windows won’t recognize your backup. It is not recommend to move backups, and if you do, be sure to copy the mediaid.bin file.

#1 is correct. When I dive down into it there is the date format. I will try the manual extraction and let you know if it works.

When I right click on the zip files I wish to extract I don't have zip option even though I installed zip7.

Did you install the 9.30 version of 7-Zip at the top right corner?

I installed the one that is linked in the instructions, 9.20. I will see if I can install the 9.30 and if it even makes a difference.

I installed 9.30 and still do not get zip option when right clicking on the zip files I want to extract. I seems I have to select "open with" then select the program to use in this case 7zip but this opens up the 7zip program prompting me to select location/files. Please advise.

Please go ahead and post a screenshot showing what you see when you right click on the ZIP files to help see what may be wrong. You should see what's below.

I'm having issues uploading the file using the insert image. I have the file saved as a bmp and when I browse for it, select it then press upload, nothing happens for a while then returns a invalid file message. I tried with both a bmp and jpg format. any ideas? they are well below the 2Mb size limit. I also tried using manage attachments w/o success. This is my 1st time uploading on the new pc so am wondering if its a setting. As I'm typing this the invalid file message keeps popping up over and over even when I am not uploading...

Ok. See if this adds it afterwards. :)

  1. Open 7-Zip using Run as administrator.
  2. In 7-Zip, click on Tools (menu bar), and click on Options.
  3. Click on the 7-Zip tab, check both Integrate 7-Zip to shell context menu and Cascaded context menu boxes.
  4. Click on OK, and close 7-Zip.

In that case, are you able to open the ZIP file and manually extract (drag and drop) the contents into the new folder from step 2?

Question. for all the different backup dates, when I go into individual ones, there are varying number of zip files or varying sizes?Does one date contain my entire library of videos, pictures and music? I'm a bit confused how the backup is laid out. It does appear I can drag to my main drive, just not sure if all of them from a specific date or what? There are backup sets then backup files then the zip. How does this work?
