My screen just went dim

I just reset my PC. I was installing things back onto it (firefox, Spotify etc) and all of the sudden the screen went dim. I went to settings and it says "Windows can't adjust the brightness on this display" Any suggestions? Restarting the computer does nothing.

Do you have all of your drivers and Windows Updates installed?

It sounds like it may be a missing driver causing this.

I installed the updates. It worked for about 20 secs, the faded out again. I did a recovery, same thing. I went to power options and did max settings.. nothing.

If you power off the monitor, let it sit for a few seconds, then turn it back on, does the screen brightness stay on for the 20 seconds then go off again?

If it does it sounds like the backlight in your monitor is going bad.

As Xunile mentioned, if nothing works on the software side, it may be your monitor going out. If you can, try getting a VGA or HDMI cable and hook it up to a TV or a external monitor and see if the same issue happens, if nothing happens then it's the monitor on your laptop going bad. Hope you find the issue! :)
