Windows Update Cleanup. Can't get rid of 28.0MB.

I had to reinstall Windows 8 Pro x64. After installing all available Window Updates I ran Disk Cleanup. The Windows Update Cleanup entry showed about 1GB of stuff. After the cleanup ran, with no apparent problems, I have 28.0MB that always shows up. Cleaning this does nothing, the 28.0MB remains and is always checked. Deleting the contents of the SoftwareDistribution folder and rebooting didn't help.

1. Is it common for WUC to show something other than zero which can't be cleaned up?

2. If it should be zero what can I do to make it zero?

Ok,, so I ran Disk Cleanup to try and see what you are referring to
Clicked on Clean up System Files
I checked off all the boxes and ran it
I checked Clean Up System Files again

I have some stuff in Temp Inet Files and Windows Defender
About 2MB total

Also note, I did the same on my Surface Pro.
Windows Updates Cleanup is no longer listed as an option on either.

Try this,,, No I do not know if that will work.

Open Control Panel
Click on Troubleshooting
Click on "Fix problems with Windows Update"
Click next, next, ok.

EDIT: Also check that you have no updates waiting to be installed

Troubleshooter said it fixed a problem but the 28.0MB is still there. Some other time ago I reinstalled Windows 8 and cleaned up my updates and the entry never appeared like you are seeing, or not seeing.

The other thing is that when you list your Windows Updates via Programs and Features, right clicking on a deleted update won't produce anything. If the update file is still on your system (or screwed up I suppose) you will see an 'uninstall' option. I see that for 99% of the updates on my list.

Realistically though 28MB seems to low of a number for all the updates I have. After all I had over 1GB of updates before I ran my first cleanup.

Being of the anal variety I like to see this entry as zero not 28MB.

What does the download sub-folder of your windows\softwaredistribution folder have in it? My download folder is 449 MB and contains 1,193 Files, 686 Folders. I think this is where the updates are kept but not 100% sure.

I think that this also might be,, not verified,, that if you have installed updates recently, it may not clear them out till a certain time has passed?
I am just guessing at that.

I ran some updates on my Surface pro, and I now have 24MB that won't clear out, so, that could be the case.

I don't think it is an issue in the long run.
