    Changing Sleep and Hibernate

    Hello Everyone,
I am new to Windows 8 and to this forum, so please accept my apologies if this query has already been answered somewhere before.
I would be most grateful if someone can help me find out how to alter the time period before a computer running Windows 8 switches into "Sleep" or "Hibernate" mode. I find the default time period to be too short in practice - it is very frustrating to answer a brief phone call and then return to the computer only to find it has dropped into one or other of these states! I have tried a Google search to find a way to alter it, but haven't been able to find any solution thus far. Your collective wisdom on this one will be much appreciated!
    Thanks in anticipation.

    2 words: Control Panel.

See the Power Options. Then the current power plan.

Power Plan Settings - Change in Windows 8

In Advanced Settings you can look for hibernate as well, located in the Sleep section as well.

    Thanks!

Thanks so much! I've done as you indicated and the problem is now solved - a great relief!
I can't help feeling puzzled, though, as to why it's so hard to find this solution using a Google search or on Microsoft's own pages...
    Anyway, thanks again!

    You're welcome.

Some results are hard to find by searching... a bit weird yes.

stopping windows 8 going to sleep after 2 minutes

    Hi,
I wonder if you, or anyone else out there, can tell me how to stop windows 8 going to sleep after only a couple of minutes? I have tried the many suggestions to be found on youtube and internet with no success so far. Some work for the first time after a reboot but revert back to going to sleep again after that.

Look in the same options as above. You choose the elapsed time (how long the computer is unused) until the sleep initiates.
You can even set it to 'never' to disable sleep entirely.
The settings need to be saved. When needed, you can revert back to defaults.

    Note:
What you change and save is for one Power Plan. If you switch from power plans (laptops, battery...) the sleep settings need to be checked there as well.

Look at the hybernate options as well, they might be enabled as well.
