Use recimg to create a snapshot of your system, including

I was doing some Google searches looking at information on Windows 8 backup possibilities, and came across this:

I'm running it now to see what it does. Looks very slow.

I created a H:\Recimg folder and so far:

C:\Windows\system32>recimg /createimage h:\Recimg
Source OS location: C:
Recovery image path: h:\Recimg\CustomRefresh.wim
Creating recovery image. Press [ESC] to cancel.
Initializing
100%
Creating snapshot
100%
Writing image (this may take a while)
1%

The recimg snapshot can then be used by Refresh, very cool.

Edit: Now I see that is only to set a snapshot as the current refresh image, not the same. I'll ask Shawn to add the create part unless it already exists somewhere.

Hmmm, it's been running for 30+ minutes and is still sitting at 1%. Not very impressive so far.

Edit: Took an hour and a half to complete. Started at 8:59 and finished at 10:26. Makes Acronis look like an outright speed demon.

Worth bearing in mind, Refresh is not the same as a backup; not even a custom Refresh image which includes your apps.

Some information on settings etc. get lost. This is partly deliberate because sometimes the settings can get messed up, and a Refresh is intended to fix things.

Vadikan did a very helpful post on what is kept and what is lost by running a Refresh.
