    Page/Swap File Issues

Under system properties I have my virtual memory set to 5118mb. I have 12GB of physical ram, and honestly don't even need virtual memory. The problem is that the system is still allocating ~17GB of space to virtual ram. I would like to note that I had Virtual Memory set to ~12GB beforehand and yet the system was allocating 24GB of space towards page file. The odd thing is is that it seems like it is taking my amount of physical ram (12gb) and adding that what I have set for page file. Ergo I turned off paging file just to test this and when I did the system still allocated 12gb of space towards page file.

    What is going on?

    Hello Helltech,

See if turning off the page file, restart the PC, defrag the HDD or TRIM the SSD, then turn on page file to what you like and restart the PC will have it the correct size afterwards.

    Hope this helps.

It is still "adding" 12 GB to whatever I set it to.

Do you mean that the hidden OS C:\pagefile.sys and C:\swapfile.sys files are still there after turning off the page file and restarting the PC?

No the files are gone, but dxdiag is still reporting that there is ~12gb of page file.

If the files are gone after you have set to show hidden OS files, then so is the page file. It sounds like dxdiag is just reporting what it was set to.

Here's what mine is currently set to compared to dxdiag. I wouldn't trust what dxdiag is saying.

Yeah, it is odd that dxdiag would report it like that when it's clearly not what set as that.

I too have killed all the PF options and set it to 0, there are no hidden or otherwise files on the disk but some programs like "MemInfo" are detecting it at various size and they were installed after the setting changes.

Its quite an annoyance to me because I'm so anal, but I guess I'll just have to deal with it.

Optimum page file size in Performance & Maintenance
What would be an optimum size for pagefile.sys ? I have 8 gb of ddr2 ram and the pagefile.sys is around 4.5 gb . I guess this is not necessary size. Would it be good to fix it around 1 or 2 gb ? Thanks in advance.
