If something bad happens and your laptop won't boot at all, then you'll want to have a System Repair Disc or System Recovery Drive (one's on a CD/DVD, the other a USB)
Recovery Drive - Create with USB Flash Drive in Windows 8

Then you can boot from the System Recovery drive and restore the System Image from the backup. I'm assuming your backup is on a separate drive rather than another partition on your laptop's internal disk?

Also, most manufacturers have an option to make their version of a Recovery Disk, which will put you back to the "as new" condition - this is well worth doing if your laptop came with Windows 8 and if the option is available to you.

Finally, note that Windows 8.1 (Preview version at least) removes the option to make a System Image.

An alternative is to make a Custom Refresh Image which only protects the system and installed software. It doesn't save your user files, but is good if you have a system corruption-type problem but the underlying disk is still OK. It does lose some settings though. I think most people will be using one of the free 3rd party backup programs instead in Windows 8.1.

If the computer died totally or was stolen for instance, then jacklim wouldn't be able to restore the installation of Windows, but I'd hope there would be a way to restore user files/ data/ photos etc. to the new computer?
