Please help solve constant disk access

I'm running Windows 8 64-bit on a Dell Inspiron 7720. My processor is a i7-3630QM, and I have 8GB of RAM. The laptop has GeForce GT 650M, with 2048MB dedicated memory, and 2047 MB shared system memory. I have no active virus protection.

It seems like I nearly always have disk activity. Lately, it's even gotten to the point where keystrokes can be delayed - when this happens, I notice that my hard drive is spinning. I checked the drive with a SMART tool, and it checked out OK. Task manager shows "system" is using .1 MB/s, but can range up to 85%.

Another thing that I've noticed is that I have some pieces of software that, after the drive is accesed, appear to lose their graphics - portions of their windows will go grey until I either hover over buttons or minimize/restore the window.

One thing that I noticed that seemed odd is that the location for my ntoskrnl.exe is C:\Windows\System32. Is this correct on a 64-bit install?

Any suggestions on where to start?

To start with, you may have answered your own question with the statement "have no active virus protection", you may have "acquired " some Malware that is working behind the system.
    ntosokrnl.exe I found in windows/WinSxS

Thanks for the response. I have used virus protection, but removed it once this problem started to make sure that wasn't what was causing the issue.
