Windows Backup not working

Win 8x64. Just got a UAC flag that Windows backup app wasn't working (see attached). Looking at Windows 7 File Recovery in the CP, all it shows is "Backup or Restore Your Files" at top and the rest of the page, which usually has some choices, is blank. Never seen that before. Rebooted to be sure. Any ideas what's going on and what to do about it? Thanks,

Hi,

1. Use the clean boot technique to see if the problem is caused by the third party software.
2. Press Win+R - rstrui - Ok, restore to the earlier point.
3. Review Google results for 0x80070424 windows backup and post what you've tried.

We'll proceed depending on the results.

I know you were trying to be helpful, but as I discovered belatedly, without a Windows key, and my keyboard doesn't have one except by software, your suggested steps were not quite the way to go (Also, I use the desktop so am not used to the Win 8 screen). I tried a system restore back a few days and that didn't solve it. Then I did a clean boot per the instructions from my local/admin acct and didn't find anything different. What I'm not sure of is how to get msconfig settings back to where they were before. I used Enable All, but is that good enough? Since I didn't do a complete survey of what was enabled and not enabled in services, I'm not sure what was enabled and not.

When I come back to it, should I be doing the clean boot from the Admin account instead?

There are multiple ways to start system restore, even if your Win key is not working. I'm just providing the fastest one.

Sorry, I can't help you with restoring your startup back to what it was before you went into clean boot diagnostics. You should've taken notes, I guess. You can enable everything, if you don't remember.

The third point is still relevant.

I just took the alternative route of running Yamicsoft's Windows 8 Mgr and that fixed it. At least for now...
