Maintenance in progress problem

Hi All,
Wondering if anyone had this problem recently?
I turned on my computer this morning and checked out a few sites and then started to do some chores. An hour later I came back to my computer and clicked on iexplorer to do more viewing and it didn't pop up ..only the hour glass just spinning around. I glanced at the taskbar and noticed the flag had a time on it. I moved the mouse to it and it said
" maintenance in progress" . I right-clicked to bring up the action center but nothing happened. I pressed the ctrl-alt-del but the task manager didn't come up either. My system was not responding to any keys I selected. This is the first time it ever happened to me.
Why does windows maintenance stop all action while it is doing this operation. I am thinking if it is defragging my drives it could take hrs :( This could ruin my day off and not be able to use my computer.
Holding the power button was the only way to stop this and restart my computer. not very pleased with how windows 8 is so controlling :)

cheers

Thank you for the reply, that link is very helpful, I saved for future use.
I was mostly wondering if anyone else had that same problem as I experienced this morning. I find it strange that windows 8 actually stopped all my actions.

It is quite possible for maintenance to slow down your response time. Especially if you have many processes running in the background and your processor power is not adequate to handle all those processes + maintenance functions at the same time (with extra power to spare). Hope this helps you. Good luck.

Very true but didn't think I had very much running. I thought my system was adequate. I have a P5E3 Deluxe Intel® X38 chipset
Intel®Core™2 Duo, E8400 3.0, and 8 gb of DDR3-1600 G.Skill ram F3-12800CL9D, HIS Radeon HD 6870 Iceq x 900 MHz 1gb.
I shall watch and see what happens on the next maintenance.
thanks again for the reply

It might be a good idea for you to compare your maintenance settings with the OPs for starters to make sure you are both comparing apples-to-apples. Just a thought.
