Solved Computer sleep problem

Hi: I'm running windows 8 home addition which was pre-installed when I bought the computer. I have set the unit to sleep after 1 hour but it is inconsistent. Sometimes it goes to sleep, other times it doesn't. I don't know how to resolve this issue. Also, what is the general feeling about having the computer go to sleep and any pros or cons.
Thanks

Hello jlj, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Do you have anything running or playing during the after 1 hour idle time?

I manually put my system to sleep instead. Since I'm always off and on the PC so much throughout the day and night, I find that sleep works best for this so that it will be instantly up and running as needed.

Thanks for the fast response. I don't have anything running that I'm aware of. Putting the computer to sleep manually is ok with me. I just thought the auto mode would be nice. Does using the sleep mode harm the computer in any way?

No. Sleep will not harm anything at all. It just depends on your needs and usage of the PC for what works best for you. :)

There could be a number of things that could delay automatic sleep. For example: Windows updates being automatically installed, automatic maintenance is running, indexing, etc....

Thanks again. I think I'll take the less frustrating route and put the computer to sleep manually. Maybe I'll revisit the issue in the future. On a completely different issue, do you think installing windows Beta 8.1 is worth while?

You're welcome. Yeah, I find putting the PC to sleep manually works best as well.

If you have the extra hard drive space, you could install Windows 8.1 Preview in a VM or dual boot with it if you wanted to play with it without affecting your current installation.

If you upgraded your current 8 installation to the 8.1 preview, then when you upgraded to the 8.1 RTM (final) version, you would only keep your personal files and none of your apps or settings.

If you upgrade from your current 8 to 8.1 RTM (final), then you would keep everything.

I think I'll wait for the final version to arrive.
