Making a restore point from an external drive

    Hey guys!

I've registered here because this forum looks very active and helpfull.

My main issue is well, I'll start from the beginning. I was trying to install Kali linux as a partition on my windows 8, and was using EasyBCD to add Kali linux to the boot entry. Somehow I ended up deleting the Windows 8 boot entry, not deleting the win8 drive but deleting the boot entry meaning I can't boot into it. I have tried MANY MANY MANY solutions to fix it. I've tried using a recovery disk but that just shows the windows logo and reboots and reboots and does the same stuff.

Eventually I just gave up and thought I'm just gonna get rid of this windows 8 which by the way came pre-install with my Toshiba L855-149, and just install windows 7. Of course I NEEDED my files so just an hour ago, I removed the hard drive from the laptop, put it into HDD Docking thing I have which allows me to add the hard drive as an external drive to my other win7 desktop PC. I started copying all my files which I am still doing now. I was thinking is there a way to make some sort of restore point from the hard drive or something? Is there another way to boot up windows 8? Is there anything else I can do? Or shall I just give up which I really don't want to do!

ANY solution is welcome, I'm willing to try anything right now! Thanks for your help guys! Hope to get this fixed.

EDIT: Not sure if this is the right section, didn't really know where to post this.

Not familiar with Kali, but as it is debian, you can probably boot it up, install boot repair and fix the windows entry.

    boot-repair / Home / Home

Ok I'm now downloading the iso, should take around 20 minutes. I'll put it on a flash drive and try to boot it up. Will tell you if it works.

EDIT: Ok I've put it on the flash drive using win32 disk imager, I've edited my BIOS to allow CSM boot and disable secure boot and put USB as first boot device. This is what I usually do when i boot to kali on a live disk. But boot-repair is not being detected and won't boot up :/

You say you deleted windows boot menu entry. Can you still get into your installed version of KALI?

You might be able to run bootice inside Kali using wine and sort it out with that.
    BOOTICE.zip

Or you could borrow my bootmedia and image your windows partition. Macrium free version is on it :

Actually i can still get into linux but not with booting it, because it failed. I can get into kali by using the live USB. Whats that file for?

It can edit the bcd store without needing windows bcdedit.exe . Make sure there is a windows entry poiting at the right place.

If you are using mbr style, it can also rewrite nt6 mbr.

Bootice is a bit odd. You add the entry first. THEN you select the relevant disk and partition in the dropdown and click Save current system. For efi systems, the bootfile is \windows\system32\winload.efi
