Question is in the title.
What does this error code mean and how do I fix it?

Were you trying to backup and restore your files or a system image? Please describe your methods and what program you were using. At what point did the restore process fail or did it finish with that error?

Was trying to restore from a previously created recovery point via System Restore Function.
Process ended with that code.

Did the recovery attempt finish or did it abort in some way? That error could indicate a successful "partial" recovery with some files not being able to be recovered.

It was followed by a popup indicating that the restore had been unsuccessful and that no files had been changed.
However the system did restart successfully and the problem that brought about the need for the restore does seem to have disappeared.

Just to be sure, check your Event Viewer for additional information about the System Restore attempt and, if all is well at this point, I would chalk it up to some files were not able to be recovered and it aborted. Also, since your original problem no longer exists, it sounds like you might be good to go!''Cheers!

Can find nothing referring to System Restore in Event Viewer.
But then I'm not sure what I should look for. :(

Strange that there is no success or failure log(s) associated with such a monumental task. I would just leave it alone if everything is working now or you can wait for another forum member to chime with some additional direction but I think I'm out of ideas at this point. Good luck.

Unfortunately the error I was trying to get around has in fact recurred.
I get a BSOD on start up with the message
system thread extension not handled
.
System goes into diagnostics for quite some time and then throws up the recovery screen.
The system restore is in fact unsuccessful but the system does restart correctly.
I think I'll need to start a thread in the BSOD section.
If I can't get this fixed I think I'll have to reinstall.

Thanks for your help.

A refresh is less painful than a reinstall.

A refresh is less painful than a reinstall.

The pain is about the same since I will have to re-install a a slew of applications, and given the circumstances and the fact that numerous strange events occurred when I was trying to create a zip of the SF diagnostic file for the BSOD I decided that a recreation and reformat of the windows partition was required.
As the Irish lady said when asked why she took two birth pills every day "To be sure, to be sure".
