Why does task manager always show CPU usage at 100%? It's

I bought a new desktop last year to run high-end software used for my degree; I installed Windows 8 on it, having got on with it on my laptop. I did notice though, after venturing into the Task Manager, that my CPU usage was at 100%. All the time. Even when idle. In fact, resource monitor says it's working at 108% load! I thought this was rather odd, so investigated further:

It appears that task manager divides the 100% usage proportionally between the processes using the CPU. So for example if Firefox, Word and Notepad were using 5%, 3% and 2% respectively, Task Manager would report 50%, 30% and 20% usage. I was initially concerned that my processor was going to take some serious damage to its life expectancy if it was being constantly loaded - but the performance monitor in Norton Anti-virus shows the CPU load to be much, much lower - where I'd expect it to be.

My system is an 3.4GHz i7, with 16GB RAM running 64-bit Windows 8 Pro. People have suggested a fresh install, but it's an almighty pain backing everything up and re-installing VPN servers and software through various security measures, so I'd rather not...

    Any clues?

How to Show Task Manager Display in Summary View in Windows 8 and 8.1 Windows 8 allows you to show the hardware from Task Manager's Performance tab in summary view, or a compact mode similar to a gadget. This will allow you to show all CPU, Memory, Disks, and Ethernet in one little window...
Good day all, My task manager is showing an unusually high CPU usage by the system, anywhere between 20-30% when the computer is idling. I've run the sfc /scannow utility and it found some corruptions, which were then fixed by the DISM utility. However the task manager is still showing that super...
I only have a few examples of this, but Mozilla firefox is a big one. I am currently typing this forum post in the application, while at the same time I have the task manager up on the app history tab. Firefox is no where to be seen. I think the only apps that show up there, are Metro apps... ...
