@ theog, The OP used the term "downgrade" but in this instance it sounds like he just replaced Windows 8 with Windows 7. He didn't downgrade though the manufacturer. That's the way I read anyway so not having downgrade rights doesn't really apply. It looks like PCWorld did the swap and likely charged a fee for it. I'll let the OP confirm this, but for the moment I'm not going to get to hung up on the downgrade rights issue.

Reply to question 1>Nothing,blank lit screen. 2>As above. 3>Yes.4>Yes.Will reiterate the hdd and lan indicator lights stay off, which indicate to me,and I hope I am wrong, that the hdd is damaged. The only thing I can access is the Bios system and nothing else.

Alphanumeric is correct,I paid PC World to remove W8 and install W7 from my Microsoft Installation Disk I purchased in 2010 I think it was.Silly me laboured under the impression that when you bought something you owned it,ah well you live and learn.

The HDD indicator will only be lit when the drive is being accessed. Same thing for the wireless indicator. The last step in the POST is to initiate the OS on the hard drive. If there is no OS installed you normally get a no operating system found message. It sounds like Windows is attempting to start but doesn't. What have you got for install media? Is it a full Windows 7 DVD? What happens when you try to boot from that?

My Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit is a full installation disk bought from PC World acka 2010 and was installed previously on my old Toshiba laptop. After having it installed on Thursday 20th June at our local PC World it worked fine.On Saturday 22nd June I filled in one of Samsungs forms asking if now I had downgraded from W8 to W7 would I be able to access their Recovery Solution 5.In the third paragraph of their reply I was advised to press F4 key while booting and this would show me if this facillity was there.Upon doing this my screen though lit went blank and has remained so ever since.Contacted Samsung by phone and they talked me through several attempts to reboot, including booting from the installation disk but sadly nothing has worked so it looks to me as if the hard drive has gone for a burton. As Samsung seem reluctant to accept responsibility for the result of their representives instructions I intend to return to PC World tomorrow and ask their engineer to check my computer and depending on his examination I will decide what action to take.

The OEM installed recovery utility is usually installed to a hidden partition. Installing Windows 8 likely erased it or made it not usable. Hitting F4 may have changed the boot loader so it's now pointing at a partition that doesn't exist. I'm just guessing here mind you. If that's all it is you should be able to boot from your install media an reinstall 7. What happens when you boot from your Windows 7 DVD? Did you change your boot order so the DVD drive is the first/boot device?

The answer to your question as regards changing boot order is in the affirmative, amongst other things that have been tried including trying to use the installation disk again. With the indicator lights for both hdd and wireless staying out indicates to me that damage has occurred to the hard drive.

The hard drive could be damaged but I wouldn't necessarily take indicator lights not being active as an indicator of that. If the drive is not being accessed (written to or read from) the indicator will not flash. So if your PC just locks up or freezes that light will not flash. The wireless indicator doesn't become active until the OS loads and you connect to a wireless network. If you know who made the hard drive you can go to their web site and download a utility that will check the drive for problems. You should be able to find a stand alone utility that can be put on a CD or even a thumb drive that you can boot from and run without Windows being loaded.

EDIT: so what happens when you try booting from your installation disk?

Pleased to advise the hard drive is o.k..The problem I have experienced and others as well has been caused by Samsung in their wisdom in issuing an update for the Bios system which improves those with Windows 8 installed but has caused problems for those who have downgraded to Windows 7.Until I can find and reinstate W7 Bios I am having to use boot override to enter my system.
Thanks to all who tried to help.
