PC keeps running long time, sleep settings not working

    Hi

    Issues:
Running a family PC, with different user loginīs
Users is leaving the PC even sometimes after logoff not putting the PC to sleep or switching on the PC, do not log in and leaves the PC running. (training of users, no result)

    Task:
Ensure the PC goes to sleep within reasonable time.

Sleep settings does not seem to work after user logoff.
(3 different login profiles) all set to same standard "balanced" scheme.
The standard scheme is changed/set to HDD off 20min, sleep 20 min, hibernate 240min.

A small app is called by screen saver logs the user off after 15 min inactivity with a 1 min warning screen.
all working fine with logoff etc.

I had hoped the adjusted standard settings "balanced" was cascaded to the "logoff" state, but it seems to run it's own life after logoff, meaning the PC keeps running (screen goes black as set in the "standard scheme) however the power settings is not putting it to sleep, it takes hours...

The Ethernet card "hard wire" is set to not wake, the wireless adapter is disabled, lock screen is disabled.

Have also tried in the registry to set all default user schemes to = 5 (this was working in XP after logoff) but seems to have no effect in Win8.
I'm not having Win8 pro, so GPO is not an option.

Seems like all questions/answers in forums etc. has a tendency to walk around this question, explaining UI options etc., and when getting close, always with a comment "this will not work after user logoff" or "not working before login".

Fighting for 2 weeks , hoping you/someone could give a solution

    Here comes the questions:
Case, after logoff I want the PC to sleep after 20 min.
Where is the settings for "logoff" state (i.e. no user logged in and after user logoff) in the registry
How to changed the setting in the registry, meaning Dword, name, value for 20 min to sleep

    Sleep settings Win8

    Hi

Super guidelines as always in tutorials

Having a challenge with sleep is not working consistently after user log off

Running a shared stationary PC "family", with different user loginīs
Users is leaving the PC even sometimes after logoff not putting the PC to sleep
    or
switching on the PC, no log in and leaves the PC running.

I had hoped the adjusted standard settings "balanced" was cascaded to the "logoff" state, but it seems to run it's own life after logoff, meaning the PC keeps running (screen goes black as set in the "standard scheme) however the power settings is not putting it to sleep, it takes sometimes hours...half day...entire day

All users having same power scheme, Ethernet card set to no wake etc...
I'm not having Windows 8 pro, so GPO is not an option.

How do I ensure the PC goes to sleep within reasonable time (20 min after no user log in/logoff)
    What to do?

    Hello CJH,

Double check to make sure that the "When sharing media" power plan setting is set to "Allow the computer to sleep" like below to see if that may be the issue.

    Hope this helps,

However, when I try to restart via settings and...

Lately my computer has been acting up. It takes forever for the computer to go to sleep. I could tell because the inside has LED lights. It used to be really fast in going to sleep and would shut off almost 5 seconds after. Now it's around 30 seconds. Also, programs like Winrar are really slow....
BSOD problem that I've had for a long time in BSOD Crashes and Debugging
I've had BSODs on and off for about 1,5 years now. It started with getting a new computer but I've never actually understood what causes it. The BSODs are pretty infrequent, they happen a few times in a row and then disappear for days or weeks. In my last install of windows 8 I managed to get rid...
Long startup time in Performance & Maintenance
I installed Windows 8 64 on a partition I created in a extra 1TB drive. Install went ok. The major problem I have is the extremly long startup time. I get the screen with the fish on it right away. I then have to sit there and wait while the dots go around in a circle for 5 minutes or so until I...
