Increased Fan Volume when Idle

Hi everybody,
I have Windows 8 installed on my laptop, and there's something I can not figure out. Whenever I leave my computer and it's in idle mode, it seems that something starts to run which causes my fan noise to increase. As soon as I move the mouse or press a key on the keyboard so that my screen is ON, my fan noise goes back to normal. Does anyone have any suggestions? There have been situations where I have left the room and when I come back after about 10 minutes, my fan noise was relatively HIGH.

Thanks

something is running in the background when idle, could be maintenance, virus scanner, backups, etc...

Since it ceases when your computer stops being idle, it may be difficult to track.

I suggest looking in your scheduled tasks and see if you find it there..

go to your start screen and start typing task options will pop up and select task scheduler

you will see what has been running in the past 24 hours first you can change that to last hour, day, etc..

Look for optimizers or scanning programs in the list..

Thank you for your answer,
When I go to Scheduled Tasks nothing appears even if I change it "Last 30 days". Isn't there any program which I can run and then leave my computer in idle and this program records what happens in the background, so that I can check it?

ok, lets try this..

in the start menu start typing event viewer, a shortcut should appear to event viewer

select it

click application, maximize full screen, stretch out the source tab to see more detail..

this will show all applications that have run already and are currently running as well including failed starts..

Actually, when I type "event" (or "event viewer"), there's only a View event logs option (in the "Settings" section), and when I open it up, there's no "application" that I can click
I uploaded a screenshot for you to see...

and browse through that to see what programs are/were running..

Or you can allow your computer to sleep

then wake it up about a minute after you hear the fan speed kick up,

note the time and date, then look at the event viewer/applications for that timeframe..

Just as a side note, do you have any system optimization/hard disk care/defrag programs installed? If so, that could be causing your problem.

It's interesting, I cleared up the whole "application" log, and my computer went to idle. Fan noise began to increase a little bit, then I opened the log, and there was no log for an application for that time...

It's most likely the defragmenter, but I would also suspect any proprietary software that the manufacturer/retailer has onboard as they may be scanning for "upgrades".

What antivirus do you have?

Can you post a screenshot of ALL the processes running on your machine from the task manager? (You have to click the "Show processes from all users..." button.)

Hello, farzadmf.

How old is the laptop? Does the fan roar when you use it?

It could be a matter of dust blocking cooling.

I don't think so, I bought the laptop about 2 months ago.
The fan noise isn't that bad when idle; I was just wondering what causes this situation. That's the reason I decided to ask here and use other people's experience.

Thank you anyway

That list helped a lot, thanks :thumb:

My first two suspects are Norton and VMware, why don't you give disabling VMware and checking Norton's Schedule to see if it has anything programmed to run at idle time?

You're quite welcome. :)

I understand now. I see it's not a huge problem. You're just curious as to why the fan runs a little faster. Good luck in your search.
