Increased Fan Volume when Idle

I noticed an interesting thing (I don't know if this is always the case, but I thought it may not be a bad ideas to share it)
My computer was idle (the screen was OFF), and the fan noise had been higher. I pressed Ctrl+Shift+Esc to turn the screen ON, and as soon as the Task Manager appeared, I noticed "System" process using a great amount of disk (it had turned orange). It gradually decreased and the fan noise was back to normal.

    Anyone any ideas???

What make and model is the laptop? Do you have screen savers turned off?

Do you have any Grid Computing software installed, e.g. BOINC for seti@home etc. etc.?

I have a Sager NP9150 laptop (you can see it in "My System Specs" section), and no, I don't have any grid computing software installed...

Yes, I realised that after I'd posted, sorry about that. Did you check that screensavers are disabled, because they will turn on even if your actual screen is off unless they are disabled.

Screen Saver - Enable or Disable - Windows 7 Help Forums

(Same deal for 8 as in 7)

Also when a computer is idle, Windows starts doing the housekeeping, indexing, defragmenting etc. etc.

I did mention that earlier as a possibility for increased activity while idle.

Other than that I can't think of anything else right now, but if I do I'll post back.

Thank you so much for your answer... I was hoping to find out what "housekeeping" Windows is doing to maybe be able to disable it. Keep me posted if anything comes to your mind...

    Thank you

See here: Automatic Maintenance - Change Maintenance Settings in Windows 8

Also some other tutorials are linked at the foot of that post.

Thank you, very useful link. Maybe Windows starts to optimize my disk(s) when idle (and that's the reason why my disk usage also increases)... It's possible to disable disk optimization, but it seems that there's no way to disable "Automatic Maintenance" in "Action Center"...

Well I sort of disabled mine by setting it to go on at a time when the machine is powered off. It's also easier for me because 8 isn't my every day system. I normally use Vista.

By the way, you might want to disable fast start so that 8 actually powers off and doesn't hibernate. That can cause issues.

You never replied regarding screen saver settings, I assume they are off?

There's not much else I can think of other than possible manufacturer of the laptop having software on board or perhaps backup software?

Hopefully someone else will come up with ideas. You might want to also find a forum that is specific for your laptop and ask there, it certainly wouldn't harm to ask.

CPU not clocking down when idle in Performance & Maintenance
In windows 8 my Core i5 3750K CPU does not reduce its clock-speed when idle. As I run an OC of 4,3Ghz, it gets pretty hot in idle, allthough it do reduce vCore a little. Dualbooting with Windows 7, and there the cpu clocks down just fine works, so not a BIOS problem. Seems to have some small...
