It's most likely the defragmenter, but I would also suspect any proprietary software that the manufacturer/retailer has onboard as they may be scanning for "upgrades".

    goto log summary

    double click application

and browse through that to see what programs are/were running..

Or you can allow your computer to sleep

then wake it up about a minute after you hear the fan speed kick up,

note the time and date, then look at the event viewer/applications for that timeframe..
It's interesting, I cleared up the whole "application" log, and my computer went to idle. Fan noise began to increase a little bit, then I opened the log, and there was no log for an application for that time...
    What antivirus do you have?

Can you post a screenshot of ALL the processes running on your machine from the task manager? (You have to click the "Show processes from all users..." button.)

    I'm using Norton Internet Security,

About the screenshot, unfortunately the list is so long I don't know how to include all the items in one screenshot

    Hello, farzadmf.

How old is the laptop? Does the fan roar when you use it?

It could be a matter of dust blocking cooling.

I don't think so, I bought the laptop about 2 months ago.
The fan noise isn't that bad when idle; I was just wondering what causes this situation. That's the reason I decided to ask here and use other people's experience.

    Thank you anyway

That list helped a lot, thanks

My first two suspects are Norton and VMware, why don't you give disabling VMware and checking Norton's Schedule to see if it has anything programmed to run at idle time?

    You're quite welcome.

I understand now. I see it's not a huge problem. You're just curious as to why the fan runs a little faster. Good luck in your search.
