I have a Sony Vaio Y 13" and the screen's brightness cannot be adjusted. The slider doesn't change anything when it is moved. Is there anything I can do or is it just gonna be like that for a while?

I have the same problem on my sony Z. It says its at 100% brightness however moving the slider makes no differance and the screen is so dim you can hardly use it! Sucks as means i cant use the OS.

Anyone else got a Sony that has worked out how to get around this?

Are you on AC or battery power?
You might need to change some power settings.

On AC, you can move the slider but the screen just stays dark. Just installed it on my GF's Sony S and it has the same problem, both are core i5 with intel gfx i wonder if its the intel gfx...?

I have a Sony Y, and I can't change it regardless of whether it's on A/C or battery. Is it possibly a driver issue or something like that?

Attesa,
With Win7/8 you should never use or need a 3rd party screen brightness control program.

believe me I know, but with Windows 8, have no choice, brightness is at max and can't change, not even with power settings. As far as I know it is a driver issue with Windows 8. :p

It's not only on Sony computers. I'm using a Fujitsu Lifebook and have been having the same problem since I installed Windows 8 last night. I tried increasing the brightness several times, but it's stuck at practically minimum power.

Edit: I ended up disabling the adaptive brightness. Worked like a charm. I'll probably have to enable it again once the full version of Windows 8 comes out (assuming the adaptive brightness is fixed by then). Here's a tutorial on how to disable it.

If the problem still persist kindly include resolution of monitor as mention in the thread http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/3997-windows-8-release-preview-download.html.

Additional requirements to use certain features:

  • Taking advantage of touch input requires a screen that supports multitouch.
  • To access Windows Store and to download and run apps, you need an active Internet connection and a screen resolution of at least 1024 x 768.
  • To snap apps, you need a screen resolution of at least 1366 x 768.

If resolution did not meet the requirements from Windows8 try to ask re-seller for they may know some adjustments or check the drivers from manufacturer's website. :)

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, my laptop's screen resolution is 1280x800. I came across a registry hack that may bypass the problem. But I'll ask a re-seller first, though.

You're welcome.

The one you have mention that I bold/italic, do not attempt to do so, it will have an effect to the OS.

I have used some but problem came out, stick first to the free software that helps you a lot.

I solved this issue downloading from Sony´s page the file invid-00211774-0042.exe and install the screen adapter included in that file. Now i can adjust screen brightness. This is the link: Sony eSupport - VPCS110FL - Controladores y Software

Why the hell not if windows 8 cant their rubbish together and release updates and fixes to this buggy OS we need to do something.....I have an HP and have the same issue, I can even get used to 8 because I can't see anything...and I paid full price for the OS so for my money I want a product that works, am I wrong in assuming these issues should have been addressed prior to its unveiling on the public....

Hello. I also have a Sony Vaio, although it's an S series, and I had the same problem. Turns out that Sony Vaios have a feature to sense the brightness and automatically adjust display brightness. No matter what changes you make on the Windows 8 Power Plan, this feature will change them seconds later.

You can disable this accessing the Vaio Control Center, then go to Image Quality, and then set to OFF where it says "Display Brightness - Set whether to sense the brightnes and automatically adjust the display brightness accordingly". I got this from Vaio Support and worked nicely. Hope it helps.
