Full amount of ram not available

    Hello,

Haven't needed help from you guys in a while. I'm even using windows 8 now. Your advice was so good the last time.. I'm back.

Ok so I have a brand new kingston 4gb ram chip installed on my ecs p-45-t black series board. It replaced a 1gb chip. My other chips all say 1.8v this new one is 1.95.

According to my board manual, the board may only take 2gb chips, that contradicts its 16gb max capacity it boldly advertises. So I threw a dart. Now its telling me that I only have 7gb's one gigabyte more than before but I technically just added 3.

So far I have increased my memory voltage in the blue setup screen you get when pressing delete to 1.95 to see if it would fix this. It has not. I also just downloaded two bios files that I have not loaded.

I wait to hear from you again.

    Thanks

Looks like the new chip is incompatible with the old ones.

It seems ddr2 667 and 800 are supported, 4 slots, up to 4 GB in all slots BUT only if the chips are identical (same manufacturer and specs) that would guarantee the full capacity and stability. Voltage would have to be the same for stability.

    I looked here:
    ECS Web Site > P45T-A (V1.0)
    Is that the right motherboard?

You get 7GB instead of 9? Means you had 6GB initially

Sounds weird for RAM, usually jumping from 4GB to 6GB but to 8GB would be the best bet. Doubling capacity with each upgrade is ideal: 4GB, 8GB, 16GB...

I'm not an expert but when it comes to RAM, I never had issues: jumped from 2GB to 4GB and from 4GB to 8GB on different pc's.

The full size isn't always what you get from 6GB...
You should try and remove one chip of 2GB (one you think is the baddest in the setup) and remain with 4GB then insert the newer kingston of 4GB and you should get 8GB.

If that doesn't help, the voltage or frequencies incompatibilities still remain and you might get another identical kingston to replace the older (smaller) chips.

I know from upgrades that some older chips get (scarified) removed from the newer setup due to incompatibilities.

I hope you get some extra advice from others here and good luck in fixing this issue.

    Cheers!

    Try:

RAM Memory Upgrade: Dell, Mac, Apple, HP, Compaq. USB drives, SSD at Crucial.com

    I use them.
They scan your computer & give specs on type & how much ram you need & can use.

Yes Mine is the ecs p45t. getting ddr2 ram is so hard already. Now I have to replace every chip? so much for a upgrade. this one is a kingston hyperX. the rest are generic

Crucial is telling me that my 4gb chip is a 2gb. My question now is, if I get chip of the same brand but not necessarily the same size will the issue be resolved?

    Download the scanner:

Use the Crucial System Scanner software to find out what type of memory is in your computer

    Run it.

Different size is not the ideal solution, the issue is different voltages. Getting them the same size and manufacturer is best.

Mixing Crucial with Kingston... not sure if it will work. It should, but since you've already had issues you better be careful. That's an older board. DDR2 is getting expensive again.

Do as you like but if you already have a 4GB Kingston, then I'd get another 4GB Kingston to solve the problem.
4 slots available: Put the chips in slot 0 and 2 or or 1 and 3 to get dual channel performance.

I assume this will be cheaper than a full kit from Crucial.
