Defrag just opens up a command prompt then closes

Whenever I run defrag this happens:



It goes away after about 0.1 second and I can't read what it says (it goes by to fast)

Why, and how do I fix?

How are you starting defrag?

I am having the very same problem! I go to the new Windows Start and do a search, select on the defrag and up pops the command prompt and then disappears without starting the defragmenter.

try searching for dfrgui.exe

if you just run "defrag.exe" you need to specify parameters. defrag.exe is best run in a command line with the proper flags. In this case:

will show you the progress and results of defragmenting the C: volume.

Like what was suggested, dfrgui.exe is the GUI-based version we're all used to seeing. Next time you search for defrag, choose "defragment and optimize drives."

I think the key step if you're searching from the Start screen is make sure you search for "Settings" and not "Apps".

(I don't know why the defragmenter is a setting rather than an app, as to my eyes it is much more like an app, as it's a program that actively does stuff, and much less like a setting which should surely just sit there once set.... but a setting is what Windows 8 calls it.)

Just open start and type optimze to quickly bring up defrag/optimze drives

You still need to change to "settings" rather than "apps" though.
