Sfc shows unable to fix corrupt files

  1. #21

    Hi caperjack,

Yes it might be worthwhile asking if Acer can send me some discs. Though I have to admit I don't agree that I have necessarily caused the problem myself. I simply partitioned a disc as recommended in many reputable sources and have subsequently found an sfc error. Unless the act of partitioning a disc is itself an irresponsible one.

In fact I did contact Acer before I partitioned the disc to ask why it was not factory pre-partitioned as their website said most of their products were and to ask their advice but I received no reply whatsoever and so had to go ahead and do it myself. I can not be sure the sfc error was not there before I partitioned the disc as I did not run it at that time.

    Thanks for all the advice.

    Hi norepli,

I have had a good look at my laptop but unfortunately there is no sign of a Windows 8 key. Hmmm not quite sure where I go from here.... May have to sleep on it.

Unfortunately, I cannot guarantee any way to do a clean install without the product/license key so anything I would suggest from here on would be just an uneducated. However, maybe caperjack will chime back in with a solution or maybe one of the real forum gurus will come forth and provide you with a solution that is known to work under your circumstances. However, I think all of you cards are now "laid out on the table" and that may make it easier for someone to enter at this point. In summary, I must say that caperjack's last recommendation is also a viable solution to your problem. Sorry, I couldn't help you further. Good luck and nitey-nite!

Hi just thought I'd drop another tip that worked for me after running sfc and not having the errors fixed.

Run this in elevated command prompt: dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
After I ran that and ran another sfc all my problems were fixed.

didn't mean that in a negative way ,just stating a fact ,it not not that partitioning a disk is irresponsible ,its just a bit dangerous if not done correctly ,as in your case ,again these are not negative comments towards you ,i fugged up a few partitions myself in all my days of trying to fix computers
you could try borrowing a copy of win8 ,same versions as yours, using your windows product key , and see if you can reinstall win8 that way

    Hi stef45,

To fix the sfc error just re-run the sfcscan again after a reboot.

Otherwise do a refresh: all your data is kept but the OS is refreshed (all programs need to be reinstalled though)
This is something I did as s well on my pre-installed W8 Core laptop as well. All worked fine.

    Refresh Windows 8

    Cheers

    Hi,

It is solved! Following BFG's advice, I ran dism. At first dism failed to run through and it seemed my problem was unfixable.

Not being sure what the best option was next, in desperation really I ran dism again and unbelievably it ran all the way through and reported that it had fixed corrupted files. I then ran sfc and it ran all the way through!

Just to be sure, I've run sfc a second time and it reported no errors found. I have noticed in the log file though that I still have some DIRSD OWNER WARNINGs.

Do you think I can just ignore these warnings as sfc completely successfully?

Thanks everyone for taking the time to help me with this: I was getting to the despairing stage! In particular thanks BFG for the dism advice which solved the problem.

If you guys think I can ignore the DIRSD OWNER WARNINGS, I can just relax and enjoy my new laptop (though I am going to create a new System Image Backup now it's all fixed!)

    Thanks again.
