Hi Guys,

Running Windows 8 Pro since its release and it has been a nice journey so far but recently or more precisely since last 3-4 days, windows has been hanging up and being unresponsive and the only way is manual hard shutdown.

One time it hang up in middle of skype call and last time it hang up in middle of browsing in Google Chrome.Windows is updated to the last update i.e 02/03/2013.

Also when laptop hangs up the fan starts rotating at high speed.

Any tests i need to run to pinpoint the source of hang ups??

I think its more of a software issue rather than hardware:think:

TIA

Dell has hardware diagnostics on the hard drive, accessed by (Usually) F12 at power on. Run a complete diagnostic to see if anything shows up. That will at least eliminate hardware.

BTW, what is the Inspiron model number, that is important in listing your system specs.

Dell does not officially support Win 8 on this model (they only have Win 7 drivers) but the Win 7 drivers are applicable to Win 8, so it should work OK.

As this is a recent problem, you could also try the System Restore and restore it back to an available restore date PRIOR to the problem. If that doesn't fix it, System Restore has an "undo" option to undo the System Restore.

Thanks Fireberd for your valuable suggestions.

Yes my laptop prior to upgrade came with Windows 7 home premium. As much as i want to avoid System Restore,i want to find out the cause behind the hang ups. Will Event Viewer logs or any such tool help in detecting any software/windows related problem?

I did run Pre-Boot Assessment Test and it detected no Hardware Fault.

As a last resort i can Refresh or Reinstall my Win8.

TIA

Just hang up again with just Google Chrome and Yahoo messenger open.Using IE10 in meantime to rule out hanging up issue because of Chrome.

This pretty much sucks:(

System Restore is not a complete reinstall. Just a step back in time with the PC. It does not delete any user data or e-mails.

From Microsoft:
System Restore helps you restore your computer's system files to an earlier point in time. It's a way to undo system changes to your computer without affecting your personal files, such as e‑mail, documents, or photos.
Sometimes, the installation of a program or a driver can cause an unexpected change to your computer or cause Windows to behave unpredictably. Usually, uninstalling the program or driver corrects the problem. If uninstalling does not fix the problem, you can try restoring your computer's system to an earlier date when everything worked correctly.

Yes i very well know about system restore. Its just that i recently uninstalled certain programs and restoring my system witll bring them back.

Currently laptop is working well when i am using IE.Maybe a bad installation/update of Chrome was the culprit.

Also i uninstalled itunes.

Keeping my fingers crossed till next hang up:p

If this problem started after the recently uninstalled programs, maybe one of them screwed up the sound?

Isolate by only having one application open at a time. e.g. you mentioned Google Chrome and Yahoo Messenger. Close the Messenger and only have the browser open and see if that makes a difference.

Sorry for resurrecting this old thread but this is getting on my nerves.I recently refreshed my windows 8 and it was working like a charm. Then all of a sudden it started hanging up when i connected my iphone to my system.

Now these random hang ups occur even when iphone is not connected.I did all the required hardware diagnostic checks and all came up clean.

So please help me to pinpoint the exact cause of these random hangups before i start chucking this laptop outta window.

By "refresh" do you mean you did a complete, clean, install? A clean install requires reformatting the hard drive. If it wasn't a clean install that is probably the best bet. After Win 8 installs, install any available Dell drivers, even though Win 8 installs some or most of the drivers. The USB drivers, except for possibily any motherboard chipset drivers, are the default built in Windows drivers.

Disable the web cam and see if that makes any difference. I've seen web cams cause many flakey problems.

Run the Dell Diagnostics, however run them for a longer period rather than just one time. Sometimes a problem will not show up until it has been run for a while.

It was the option "refresh your pc without affecting your files" which i did and not clean install.

I have all the required drivers for my dell.I will try to disable my webcam though.

I already ran Dell diagnostics and it came up with no problem.

Is it possible to pinpoint the problem in event viewer or such??
