Solved Windows 8 pro takes 5+ mins to boot

Hello there.

The problem: Computer boots, strats loading windows; the dots going in a circle thing (before the login screen). The dots go round and around (the HDD led blinks for the first few seconds then just stops). This goes on for a couple of mins (5+ according to the event viewer) and then bam.. I get the login screen and everything works fine.. :l

I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8 pro yesterday. Had this problem, figured it was because I upgraded instead of just doing a clean install.

Did a clean install today, still same problem. Disabled fast boot, didn't change anything. Updated drivers, didn't change anything. Updated the MB bios to the latest version, didn't change anything. What I've found out is that when I unplug one of my hard drives it boots up just fine. Which reminds me, I had to unplug my normal HDD's when installing Windows 8.. something about it only supporting 4 primary partitions.

My C drive is an Intel X25-M 80GB SSD drive.

Does anybody have any idea what might be causing this?

Cheers

You seem to have 2 Active drives/partitions (Disk 1 and Disk 5).

Were you unplugging Disk 5, when your boot performance improved?

With DOS, Microsoft Windows, and OS/2, a common practice is to use one primary partition for the active file system that will contain the operating system, ...
Disk partitioning - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thanks for that. I failed to notice that >.< and that was most likely the cause!

But I managed to get an even newer sata driver from the Marvell driver page (Gigabyte apparently lists old sata drivers) and after that update the problem went away. I marked the drive inactive too just now though :)

Cheers!

I have the exact symptoms as described in this thread's initial post. However, my disk management screen looks different. I am running Windows 8 Pro w/ Media Center 64-bit.

Any suggestions? Problem arose about 2 weeks ago for no reason that I can discern. I have run disk scans, defrag, full anti-virus and malware scans. Nothing.

Did as you suggested ... no discernible improvement. After rebooting, I checked regedit, and the entry I deleted was back!

I don't get why my hard drive [C] is divided into 4 areas ... what are the first 2 for? As I understand it, the EFI partition is for Macs. I have never owned a Mac in my life. This hard drive is the original one purchased with my system. I am confused.

Fresh Start - Same Problem

Ran 4 + hours of diagnostic hardware tests via HP; everything passed. I formatted my drive via a factory system recovery. Guess what? Same situation. A complete waste of time going through that ... now to install all my software.

Thank you SIW2 for your input. If you, or anyone else can think of possible causes/solutions I sure would appreciate it!

Hardware Problem?

Have you checked that:
  • All of your data and power cables are properly connected?
  • All of your components are properly seated (e.g. RAM and Graphics card)?

 Remember to disconnect your PC from the mains and to take anti-static precautions.

All cables are properly connected. I will check the interior this weekend.

I installed Norton Utilities 16 and ran scans and boot optimization. Nothing seems to work. During the boot opt., there were lines & lines of WARNINGS! on a black screen just scrolling along one after another ... most had long strings of letters & numbers. One line stuck out and it said something to the effect that another operation had control of the file pagefile.sys.

This is now a clean installation of windows 8 Pro 64-bit

Also, looking at the image I posted above in #4, can I do away with any of those partitions? Is there a tool I can do this with, if safe?

Are any of your drives usb? My computer boots and shuts down slow if I have my usb drives pluged in. I don't know if it's Windows 8 because it take a while to get past the post screen.

Hi there
sometimes when having a load of USB drives plugged in it DOES take longer to boot -- but that's often the BIOS is taking much longer rather than Windows itself - particularly when you have things like external 2TB drives plugged in.

I haven't noticed though any problems with Windows shutting down.

Cheers

Opened the tower ... everything is connected ... I reseated all the RAM.

On the phone with Microsoft all day yesterday ... ran scripts & utilities. Nothing improved the situation. I'm at a loss.

Do you have C drive as first boot device and check your start up programs in the task manager or bad controller or cable possible other than that hard to find an issue without working on it personally good luck Google for possible answers.

I have the boot options set to default. First thing listed is "Boot Manager."

I am wondering ... if I were to purchase a Microsoft Windows 8 disk and use that for a fresh install of the OS [rather than use the HP OEM version I have on my recovery partition - did that twice, already], would that create all new partitions on my C drive and clear out any & all that are there now ... ?

You would have to create them yourself. You can select drive options (advanced ) during the installation process.

That assumes you are doing it the bog standard way using setup.exe.
