Are any of your drives usb? My computer boots and shuts down slow if I have my usb drives pluged in. I don't know if it's Windows 8 because it take a while to get past the post screen.

    Hi there
sometimes when having a load of USB drives plugged in it DOES take longer to boot -- but that's often the BIOS is taking much longer rather than Windows itself - particularly when you have things like external 2TB drives plugged in.

I haven't noticed though any problems with Windows shutting down.

    All drives are internal. :-(

Opened the tower ... everything is connected ... I reseated all the RAM.

On the phone with Microsoft all day yesterday ... ran scripts & utilities. Nothing improved the situation. I'm at a loss.

Do you have C drive as first boot device and check your start up programs in the task manager or bad controller or cable possible other than that hard to find an issue without working on it personally good luck Google for possible answers.

I have the boot options set to default. First thing listed is "Boot Manager."

I am wondering ... if I were to purchase a Microsoft Windows 8 disk and use that for a fresh install of the OS [rather than use the HP OEM version I have on my recovery partition - did that twice, already], would that create all new partitions on my C drive and clear out any & all that are there now ... ?

You would have to create them yourself. You can select drive options (advanced ) during the installation process.

That assumes you are doing it the bog standard way using setup.exe.
